The Opportunity
Are you interested in an opportunity to work within the field sciences and monitor the health of Queensland’s waterways and oceans? We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Officer (T02) working with the Science and Technology division. You’ll get to see spectacular parts of Queensland, heading out on boats to collect water quality samples and maintain remote monitoring stations. You’ll also spend time in our state-of-the-art facilities turning those samples into data that will inform decisions by the department and partners in the wider community.
In this role, you’ll find:
A challenging position with a purpose that matters
You will be responsible for helping to collect estuarine and marine water quality data from all over Queensland. You will build on your knowledge of water quality monitoring equipment and sampling techniques. You will need to use your eye for detail to ensure data is accurately captured, recorded and stored in our database. This position requires extensive travel, with up to 5 days away at a time; however it is a rewarding role as you are helping to contribute to keep Queensland waterways’ healthy!

You will work in a small, close-knit team (with flexible working arrangements available) and report to the Senior Technical Officer. You’ll also work and collaborate with officers and scientists from other teams across the department who are passionate about their work and have a great deal of knowledge to share about working in the Queensland marine and estuarine environment.
Diverse, interesting work and experiences
In addition to water quality monitoring activities, you will also have the opportunity to use your snorkelling skills to assess seagrass communities, provide field support for environmental harm legal investigations, develop innovative remote monitoring stations, and collaborate on research and development projects with partners such as UQ and CSIRO.

Located in Dutton Park, you will work in a contemporary building and have access to state-of-the-art facilities. You’ll be part of a dynamic work environment, supporting creative thinking and respect of team members to deliver on our units’ monthly priorities and other essential tasks.
You’ll need:
● A minimum qualification of diploma, advanced diploma, qualification from a recognised tertiary institution in one of the following disciplines: Biological or Chemical Sciences or agreed equivalent. A manual driver’s license, 4WD experience, a Recreational Boat License (Coxswains NSCV1 desirable) and being a confident swimmer would also help!
● An understanding of water quality monitoring, best practice data collection and sample handling skills, and an adaptable mindset for when the weather conditions uproot plans
● To be able to trouble-shoot electronics, and have precise laboratory practices
● Experience safely operating, towing and maintaining vessels, preferably in commercial conditions.
● Good people skills to professionally navigate encounters with team members the public, and to maintain strong relationships with your team because sometimes you’ll work independently
