The Business Data Analyst enables data‑led decision making through the delivery of high‑quality analytics, reporting, and insights within a dynamic Shared Services environment. The role supports business leaders, category managers, and business partners with trusted data to inform commercial decisions, performance management and continuous improvement.
You will design, develop, and maintain enterprise‑grade dashboards, reports, and other analytics products, while helping to improve data quality, elevate reporting standards, and enable self‑service analytics. The role works across multiple data sources, including ServiceNow and other enterprise systems, and partners closely with key stakeholders within Sydney Water.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Design, develop and maintain dashboards and reports within Shared Services, supporting areas such as workforce analytics, safety, fleet and tenancy, property services, risk, training and others.
- Translate complex organisational data into clear, actionable insights for executives, managers and operational teams.
- Move beyond descriptive reporting to deliver diagnostic and insight‑driven analysis that supports commercial decision‑making.
Data management and governance
- Examine and evaluate existing reports and datasets to improve accuracy, relevance, usability and consistency.
- Maintain and elevate reporting standards, definitions, metrics and documentation to ensure data is trusted and repeatable.
- Work with source system owners to understand system changes and assess impacts on data models, reports and dashboards.
Self‑service and capability uplift
- Enable higher levels of self‑service reporting and analytics through well‑designed Power BI datasets, semantic models and reusable reporting assets.
- Develop guidance, training material and instructions to support users in interpreting and using data and dashboards effectively.
- Support uplift of analytics maturity across Business Systems and Insights, Shared Services and Sydney Water broadly.
Stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement
- Partner closely with People & Governance teams and business stakeholders to understand information needs and evolving priorities.
- Identify opportunities to streamline reporting processes, reduce manual effort and improve automation.
- Provide analytics input into continuous improvement initiatives, assurance activities and governance processes.
Technical delivery
- Use business intelligence and analytics tools (such as Power BI, Excel and enterprise data platforms) to deliver scalable solutions.
- Support data modelling, transformation and integration activities in collaboration with digital and data teams.
- Ensure reports meet performance, security and information management requirements.
About you
You are an analytics and insights professional who combines strong technical capability with commercial and stakeholder awareness. You’re comfortable working with complex data and equally comfortable explaining it to nontechnical audiences.
Essential experience and capabilities
