Role Overview:

The Deputy Head of Staging supports and collaborates with the Head of Staging to manage and deliver the staging elements of Sydney Theatre Company’s broad range of world class theatre projects and events. The role has leadership responsibilities within the Staging department, including rostering, managing, and supporting the department’s team of Staging Technicians, Riggers, and Mechanists. The role provides staging advice and technical expertise to Sydney Theatre Company and its stakeholders in a range of theatre venues. The role is responsible for delivering projects on time and within budget by utilising production and organisational resources to plan, implement, and achieve set goals and objectives. 

The Deputy Head of Staging acts as Head Mechanist for productions and tours as required by the Head of Staging and Head of Technical Operations. To achieve this, the Deputy Head of Staging works closely with Production Managers to research, develop, and deliver the Staging elements for designated projects using industry best practice. The role shares responsibility for the on-going maintenance of Staging Department equipment and resources. 


Working at STC:

  • This is a full time permanent role and you will work in accordance with the prescribed weekly for your role. This involves regular night and weekend work. You may also be asked to work paid regular overtime in accordance with Production schedules.

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience in staging in a similar role in theatrical performance contexts.  
  • Expert knowledge of staging technology and systems for live performance. 
  • Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills, with strong interpersonal sensitivity. 
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit, a self-starter and an ability to lead a technical team. 
  • A high level of understanding of Work Health and Safety legislation and procedures as related to the theatre and entertainment industries, with proven experience of implementing these requirements in an effective and sympathetic manner. 
  • Possession of an Australian High-Risk Work – Intermediate Rigging license or the willingness to acquire one. 
  • Proficient computer skills, including experience in the use of CAD software. 
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in specifying, installing, and operating complex automated fly systems and staging systems including revolves, elevators, tracks, automated, single and double purchase fly systems. 
  • An appreciation of the artform of theatre, especially in an Australian context.
