We are currently seeking a Dewatering Technicians to join our Dewatering team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Dewatering Specialist, the Dewatering Technician’s responsibility is to manage and maintain water control systems in our open-pit mining operation. The successful incumbent will ensure efficient water management, contributing to safe working conditions and optimal production performance.
The opportunity
Technical Accountabilities
- Operate, monitor, and maintain dewatering pumps, pipelines, and associated equipment to control water levels in the open-pit mine.
- Install and relocate dewatering systems as required, including submersible and high-volume pumps.
- Inspect and perform routine maintenance on pumps, motors, and piping systems to ensure continuous operation.
- Identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or water flow issues, coordinating repairs with maintenance teams.
- Monitor water discharge to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
- Record and report water levels, equipment status, and maintenance activities to supervisors.
- Assist with pipefitting, hose handling, and equipment transport as necessary.
- Collaborate with mining and drilling teams to optimize dewatering strategies and minimize disruptions to operations.
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental protocols, including proper handling of fuels and chemicals.
- Carry out other operational tasks as required.
Scheduling Accountabilities
- Ensuring any undesired events, unsafe practices or near misses are recorded and reported to comply with established OH&S policies and practices
People Accountabilities
- Participating in trainings provided by the business and passing on knowledge to sub-ordinates in the course of your work.
- Complying with established environmentally sustainable measures to not adversely impact on the natural fauna, flora, freshwater resources and marine life within the bounds of Simberi Island.

Essential
- Behavior consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- High school diploma or equivalent (Technical training in mining, plumbing, or mechanical systems preferred)
- Experience in dewatering systems, pumps, or water management in mining or construction is highly desirable
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical components, and fluid dynamics
- Familiarity with environmental and safety regulations related to water management
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including adverse weather, and perform physically demanding tasks
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
