We are currently seeking a Rigger to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Crane Supervisor, the rigger is responsible to direct the movement of cranes to enable safe loading and unloading of loads of items in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities

  • Directs the movement of cranes to enable safe loading and unloading of loads of items including mining and heavy earthmoving equipment on/off sea vessels and at Simberi Gold Mine.
  • Inspects loads including size, weight, shape and centre of gravity and determines the correct lifting equipment required.
  • Splice ropes and cables required for slinging.
  • Inspect, maintain and repair rigging equipment.
  • Inspects chains, slings, ropes, cables, hooks and lifting gear for damage or wear.
  • Ensure loads do not exceed crane SWL, are evenly balanced. Guides loads into place.
  • Attaches lifting devices to hoisting equipment.
  • Signals crane driver to lift loads.
  • Transportation of loads via Articulated Truck or Sidelifter, light plant or forklift.
  • Inspection and recording of equipment condition via daily Machine Logbooks.
  • Compilation and adherence to JHSAs.

 Scheduling accountabilities

  • Promote and adhere to the company’s internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards by consistently maintaining a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
  • Be accountable for the quality of work output from the department through an ongoing monitoring and audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and company standards through training and development of staff and promoting by example.
  • Ensure all administration functions and tasks associated with the position are undertaken and completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Identify training requirements of subordinates through consultation with the employees and the Simberi Gold Company Training Department
  • Using established training methods and in conjunction with the Training Department subordinates to achieve competency in the area identified and within the scope of their position
  • Participate in training provided by the business
  • Record and report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near misses to the captain
  • Comply with established OH&S policies and practices
  • Take responsibility for reporting of incidents, including any injury or near miss to the OH&S Department and Safety Committee in a timely manner
  • Regularly communicate with subordinates regarding new OH&S initiatives and OH&S statistics

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Prerequisite Dogging Competencies.
  • Certificate III in Rigging.
  • Advanced rigging (RA) desirable
  • Current Heavy Vehicle Class 6 Driver’s Licence and Forklift ticket.
  • Actively participate and promote a safe working environment, participate in Departmental safety meetings and display a safety conscience attitude in accordance with the OH&S policies and procedures, and safe working practices.
  • Ability to plan work effectively and efficiently with a minimum of supervision and to set priorities.
  • Punctual attendance for all rostered shifts.
  • Must have gained 4 to 5 years’ experience rigging.
  • Minimum Grade 10 education.
  • Prepared to work out of hours as required.
