Job Summary

We are currently seeking to recruit a Mining Engineer to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations in Simberi Island in New Ireland Province. 

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, and the primary role is for the safe design and implementation of drilling and blasting plans and systems as well as other production engineering requirements in the Technical Services department. 

This is an exciting time to join Simberi & St Barbara as we embark on our “Building Brilliance” journey to transform the business and deliver sustainable value. 

This is a FIFO role on 15 days on, 13 days off roster. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands.

 Key roles and responsibilities include

Technical accountabilities

  • Work with the technical services and mining teams to develop short to medium term schedules and forecasts in line with company targets and objectives.
  • Support the mining operations team to achieve production targets by providing technical support in terms of mine design and planning.
  • Assist the senior mining engineer in the development and implementation of mine planning and scheduling system, processes, and procedures.
  • Assist the senior mining engineer with their efforts to ensure that the mine planning team provides a consistently high level of support to mining operations at Simberi.
  • Coordinate and consult with the mining department and the tech services team to ensure that all the daily mining and planning activities are conducted in a manner which allows safe and efficient mining operations.
  • Assist with tracking, reporting and analysis of daily, weekly, and monthly mining related production data.

Drill and Blast

  • Assist with the planning and design of blast holes, tie ups and charging plans as required and provide technical support to the Drill & Blast Team.
  • Assist with the planning and scheduling of drill and blast operations in line with the short term mine plan and integrate this work with other planning and operational areas.
  • With the support of the planning team, actively engage with the production team to communicate designs and plans to ensure that the drill & blast processes are optimised.

Learning and Development

  • Contribute to building and developing an effective team.
  • Assist with the training and development of the team including graduate engineers.
  • Ensure own work performance meets all role requirements.
  • Manage your professional learning and development to develop in current role and for future roles.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Current unencumbered Driver’s Licence
  • Ability to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes.
  • Bachelor’s Engineering Degree in Mining Engineering.
  • At least three (3) years relevant work experience in open pit mine planning.
  • Working knowledge of mine design software, preferably Deswik CAD.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and work effectively and efficiently and with a minimum of supervision.
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals

 Desirable

  • Experience with drill and blast
  • Previous experience with mine scheduling software
