We are currently seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mine Technical Service team in a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Simberi Island, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer will provide geotechnical support and services to Mine Technical Service, Mining and other operational teams at Simberi. The Geotechnical Engineer will assist with maintaining a minimum safe standard for all personnel, infrastructure and equipment on site as well as identifying and implement business improvement through problem solving, innovation and technology. In addition, they will assist with ensuring the geotechnical systems and procedures are implemented, employed and maintained to mitigate geotechnical hazards to the site.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities

  • Support the development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement of Geotechnical Management Plans to ensure safe, sustainable, and compliant mining operations.
  • Perform key geotechnical engineering functions, including mine plan and schedule reviews, slope and wall design assessments, excavation compliance inspections, geotechnical mapping, data collection, monitoring, stability analysis, design recommendations, and QA/QC activities.
  • Identify, assess, report, and manage geotechnical hazards and risks, implementing monitoring systems and control measures to maintain safe operating conditions.
  • Communicate geotechnical risks, hazards, and operational issues effectively to mine personnel and management, ensuring timely awareness and appropriate mitigation measures.
  •  Participate in and lead geotechnical investigations and projects to evaluate slope stability and establish design criteria that support the safe and efficient extraction of resources from existing and future mining areas.
  • Provide technical geotechnical support to mining operations through collaboration with internal departments and external stakeholders, while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and company safety standards.
  • Contribute to major hazard management processes, including the preparation of reports and the communication of geotechnical risk information to operational teams, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and review of geotechnical programs related to ground control, slope stability, geotechnical monitoring, and mine infrastructure to support operational performance and risk management

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Managing effective use of available resources, including own time, in support of the delivery of the team/crew.

People accountabilities

  • Support Senior Geotechnical Engineer with geotechnical data collection to maintain a high standard of monitoring and reporting.
  • Assist with the training and development of the team including graduate engineers and geologist.
  • Ensure own work performance meets all role requirements.
  • Manage your professional learning and development to develop in current role and for future roles.

Essential

  • Bachelor’s Engineering Degree in Geotechnical, Mining Engineering or Geology
  • At least four (4) years relevant work experience in an Open Pit Geotechnical Engineering role
  • Working knowledge of mining software, preferably Deswik
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in your work
  • Strong communication skills, problem solving skills and analytical skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines on multiple tasks
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals
  • You must have a strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards
  • Ability to plan and work effectively and efficiently and with a minimum of supervision
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Maintain the highest level of punctuality and attendance and be prepared to accept responsibility
