We are currently seeking a Senior Field Supervisor to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent, the primary purpose of this role is to contribute to leading St Barbara’s exploration activities at Simberi, Papua New Guinea in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision, business strategy, Values, policies and compliance obligations

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Contributing to ensuring the health and safety of all personnel associated with the Company’s Papua New Guinea exploration activities
  • Ensuring the effective co-ordination, communication, organisation and management of remote exploration camps to facilitate exploration activity within the EL 609 (Tatau and Big Tabar Islands) in order that Exploration programs are undertaken in a timely manner
  • Ensuring the capture of high quality survey data for creeks and trenches using dGPS, GPS and tape and compass technique
  • Supervising the local hire field teams in the undertaking of exploration activities such as trenching, surveying, line clearing, soil sampling etc. and provide coaching where required
  • Proper planning and managing of logistics, supervision and safety in respect to operating the remote exploration camps in a productive manner
  • Contributing to ensuring that the Papua New Guinea exploration function meets all relevant internal and external compliance obligations and is considered a welcome guest in host communities
  • Ensuring that all Simberi Exploration safety procedures and processes are adhered to and provide coaching to subordinates where necessary
  • Ensuring that all communications equipment is kept in good working order and that any issues with equipment is reported to management in a timely manner
  • Providing timely, accurate and relevant reporting to the Manager Simberi Projects and other internal and external parties as appropriate
  • Assisting the Exploration HSE officers in implementing emergency response procedures, carrying out emergency drills, conducting safety inductions/training and presenting safety toolbox meetings
  • Ensuring delivery to promise all planned exploration field work and drill activities in a safe, cost effective, and timely manner and consistent with the requirements of the FY24, FY25, and FY26 Simberi Sulphide drilling program and EL609 work programmes.
  • Providing appropriate and effective frontline field leadership, consistent with St Barbara standards and values, and in assistance to geologists.
  • Contributing productively as a member of the Simberi Exploration Leadership Team.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Managing in the effective and efficient use of the available resources including own time, in support of the development and delivery of the FY24, FY25, and FY26 Simberi Sulphide drilling program plans.

People accountabilities

  • Contributing to building, developing and leading an effective and capable Papua New Guinea exploration team in the company’s HSEM MS.
  • Coaching Exploration personnel, where applicable, in the HS systems and protocols.
  • Asist, where applicable, in maintaining good relations with the communities within which we work

Health, Safety, & Environment accountabilities

  • Assist in ensuring all members of the Exploration team and Project contractors, are complying to statutory regulations and St Barbara’s HSEC MS, in all exploration field activities.
  • Demonstrate a proactive commitment to HSE excellence through frequent Visual Leadership observations and by attending and taking an active role in pre-start meetings.
  • Assist ensuring Critical Risk Control Standards (CRCS) relevant to exploration work including (but not limited to) Light Vehicles; Surface Mobile Equipment; Lifting Operations; Plant, Equipment and Power Tools; Isolations; Working at Height and Drilling are adhered to in all exploration field activities.
  • Abide by a set of mandatory zero tolerance rules (Rules to Live By).
  • Apply a pre-start risk assessment tool prior to commencing tasks (Start Safe procedure, Job Hazard Analysis or Team Based Risk Assessment).
  • Assist in ensuring contractors and contract personnel comply with HSEMS STD3 – 009 Contractor Management Guideline.
  • Maintain effective, transparent and open communication and consultation with stakeholders associated with St Barbara exploration activities (including employees, contractors, suppliers and local community).
  • Assist in implementing St Barbara exploration environmental rehabilitation procedures, surface disturbance permitting process, guidelines, risk registers.
  • Understand the exploration site specific Crisis and Emergency Response Plans.
  • Strive to achieve goals and targets outlined in the Exploration specific HSE Plan to drive continual improvement

Essential

  • Behavior consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • At least Ten (10) years’ experience working in an exploration field based role
  • Proficient with Tape and Compass survey techniques, use of both handheld GPS and dGPS devices
  • Strong character with the ability to enforce company rules and policies no matter the opinion of other team members
  • Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people
  • Strongly field oriented and prepared to work in remote environments.
  • Prepared to work out of remote fly camps in challenging conditions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office – Word / Excel / PowerPoint
  • Highly proficient in written and oral English
  • Fluent Pidgin speaker
  • Experience in emergency response procedures with a particular focus on remote areas
  • Strong knowledge of first aid techniques especially in a remote environment, preferably has a current Senior First Aid Certificate or higher
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • High level of physical fitness – ability to work long hours in the field in steep topography and hot weather conditions.
  • A demonstrated strong capability in applying Health, Safety and Environment Policies, Procedures and Standards to exploration
  • Sound knowledge of exploration and drilling techniques including RC drilling, diamond drilling and trenching
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple competing field priorities and reconciling these with the FY24, FY25 & FY26 Sulphide drilling objectives
  • Demonstrated capacity to make sound short-term tactical decisions – quickly assembling and interpreting data to successfully action priorities
  • Demonstrated capability in organising field work, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement
  • High energy and level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience working in a remote location and operating in wet, tropical and steep environments
  • Successful work experience in a Melanesian country or in other developing countries
  • Proficient pidgin speaker
