We are currently seeking a Power Station Operator to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Power Station Supervisor.   

The Power Station Operator is responsible to operate plant and equipment in all areas of the Power Station (HFO) including the Engines, Separators and Control Room to ensure the provision of power to the mine site and Process Plant as required. 

The opportunity

 Technical accountabilities

  • Effectively operate diesel engines, and auxiliary equipment in accordance with safe operating procedures to ensure sufficient and consistent power is provided to all end users.
  • Follow all procedures and instructions pertaining to start-up, shut-down and normal operations of the power plant systems.
  • Watch over of all Alarms / Parameters of Engines and auxiliaries, Monitoring, and analysis of trends of data pertaining to equipment’s at all times and making proper follow up in this regard.
  • Rotate on duties between day shift and night shift in the HFO Power Plant for operation
  • Utilise SCADA, the computerised control system to monitor engine parameters and adjust variables to ensure consistent provision of power to end-users.
  • Operate, monitor and service all HFO Plant and equipment including heavy fuel oil separators, fuel / day tanks, and sludge incinerator, chlorination, and demineralisation plants, on site standby generators.
  • To comply with all safety regulations including isolation, lock out and tag out and perform emergency procedures to protect personnel and equipment in case of damage or failure of safety devices.
  • Ensure timely recording of all equipment checks, engine parameter measurements, control adjustments and servicing activities for diesel engines, separator, and control room and in the log sheets for each area, providing information to supervisors as required.
  • Complete, update and maintain all logs, check lists and running records in a clear and concise manner.
  • Carry out all equipment isolations and issue safe work permits for maintenance personnel in accordance with the Wartsila systems.
  • Utilise procedures for the effective detection of faults in all areas, including plant test runs and timely response to alarms and fault warning systems.
  • Actively participate in all departmental activities, including skills training, shift handover communications, toolbox meetings and any other activities as required by the supervisor.
  • Encourage all personnel in operator’s team to comply with all SGCL policies and procedures.
  • Accept personal responsibility for following up on training and development needs identified for you by your supervisor and Wartsila team.
  • Carry out all tasks with consideration for cost savings and efficiency. Take care of all SGCL property and equipment.
  • Actively participate in a culture of best OH&S practice in the work group through leading by example, mentoring and development of junior work-group personnel.
  • Meet or exceed on-job OH&S standards, by carrying out all tasks to SGCL safety policies and reporting OH&S issues.
  • Ensuring that HSEC incidents are reported and assist in investigations to identify any additional controls required.
  • Provide the relieving shift operator with a complete handover, bringing to his attention any operational disturbance, malfunctions, or abnormalities.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • A minimum level of Grade 10 education.
  • 3 – 5 years exposure to HFO Power Plant operation preferably within a mining environment; through experience in a similar operation.
  • Wartsila Power Station Operator Certificate for W9L20 DG engines or equivalent formal training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in all aspects of operation, monitoring and knowledge of steam turbines, diesel engines, HFO separation units and related plant & equipment.
  • A sound awareness of operational safety issues.
  • Good computer literacy – exposure to computerized control systems in a power generation environment.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • An ability to follow established procedures and to have the self-discipline to complete work on time with minimal supervision.

Desirable

  • High Voltage Switching Certificate
