We are currently seeking a Business Analyst to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Finance Superintendent, the successful candidate will provide finance and commercial support, analysis and governance to the Simberi Operation and projects

Everyone at St Barbara Limited is required to understand and act in accordance with St Barbara’s values and policies and meet all relevant internal and external compliance obligations. The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The Opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Ensuring timely and accurate reporting, by proactively working with Managers and Superintendents to ensure reported results are accurate, including all necessary accruals and revaluations and that variances are adequately explained against budgets and forecasts.
  • Preparing and reviewing the annual budget and quarterly and ad-hoc forecasts under the supervision of the Senior Business Analyst.
  • Assist the Finance Superintendent and Accounting Supervisor in maintaining and updating the capital expenditure tracker for site-based projects, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with budgetary controls
  • Leading a timely and accurate End of Month reporting process.
  • Ensuring all corporate reporting deadlines are met.
  • Working co-operatively and in conjunction with other Commercial department staff to ensure the best possible service to the operations.
  • Examine ways in which to improve both the service provided and the cost of the finance and admin functions.
  • Taking a proactive approach to problem-solving and continual organizational change through the identification and implementation of better ways to complete tasks.
  • Reviewing monthly variance analysis (actuals Vs forecast & financial year budget) and report to Simberi Management & Corporate Finance
  • Reviewing monthly costs, including cost initiatives to reduce, where possible, costs
  • Providing finance business partnering to Simberi operations and projects
  • Addressing outstanding audit issues to a “satisfactory” conclusion.

 Scheduling accountabilities

  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, budget, and forecast reporting.
  • Promote and adhere to the company’s internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards by consistently maintaining a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
  • Interpret legislation, government standards and agreements. Provide input/informed commentary, improvement opportunities and areas of risk to management.
  • Be accountable for the quality of work output from the unit/department through ongoing monitoring and audit process.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and company standards through training and development of staff and promoting by example.
  • Ensure all administration functions and tasks associated with the position are undertaken and completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Using established training methods and in conjunction with the Training Department, train subordinates to achieve competency in the area identified and within the scope of their position
  • Participate in training provided by the business.
  • Comply with established environmentally sustainable measures to not adversely impact the natural fauna, flora, freshwater resources and marine life within the bounds of Simberi Island.

 People accountabilities

  • Ensure staff resources are maximized, and staff members undertake appropriate training and development so they are skilled efficiently to perform allocated duties.
  • Work with and develop the community through the support of company initiatives.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA qualified or equivalent
  • Proven experience as a Business Analyst, preferably within the mining, resources, or heavy industry sector.
  • Strong understanding of mining operations and business processes, including production, maintenance, logistics, and supply chain.
  • Experience in business process analysis, requirements gathering, and documentation.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into functional specifications for technical teams.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as Pronto Xi or SAP.
  • Ability to prepare and analyse financial and operational reports to support business decision-making.
  • Capacity to provide support to the Site Accountant when required, including assistance with financial data analysis, reporting, and reconciliation tasks.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work across departments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote mining environment and FIFO roster if required.

Desirable

  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Some experience supervising and coaching junior staff
  • Experience in the mining or resources sector.
  • Familiarity with business intelligence tools such as Microsoft Power BI.
  • Understanding of budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting processes.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and process optimisation practices.
