Job Summary

We are currently seeking to recruit a Geotechnical Engineer to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations on Simberi Island in New Ireland Province.

The Role

The Geotechnical Engineer reports to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer and the primary role is to provide geotechnical support and services to Mine Technical Service, Mining, and other operational teams at Simberi.

This is a FIFO position, with a 15:13 roster. Point of Hire available: Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Tabar Islands Group, Alotau, Buka, Goroka, Hoskins, Madang, Popondetta and Wapenamanda.

Technical accountabilities

  • Asist with the development, implementation, and ongoing management of the Geotechnical Management Plans.
  • Various tasks relating to geotechnical management including review of mining plans/schedules, wall design and excavation compliance, documentation of inspections and data collection, geotechnical monitoring, stability analyses, design recommendations and QAQC.
  • Proactive communication of geotechnical issues in mining to the workforce and management
  • Conduct and partake in projects as required by the mine to assess slope stability and provide appropriate design parameters for safe and effective mining of new and existing operations.
  • Provide a geotechnical service to the mine through understanding, complying, mentoring, and liaising internally and externally to promote compliance with mining regulations, legislation, and company safety objectives relevant to ground conditions.
  • Actively identify, report, and manage geotechnical risks within the operation and develop and maintain systems to monitor and manage these.
  • Assist with major hazard reporting and regular communication of surface related geotechnical risks to various stakeholders
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and review of geotechnical programs in respect of ground monitoring, ground control and mine infrastructure.
  • Assist with ensuring that the mine has appropriate geotechnical procedures and standards, and that the workforce is suitably trained.
  • Working closely with the mine operations and technical services teams to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience required:

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Ability to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes.
  • Bachelor’s Engineering Degree in Geotechnical, Mining Engineering or Geology.
  • At least four (4) years relevant work experience in an Open Pit Geotechnical Engineering role.
  • Working knowledge of mining software, preferably Deswik.
  • Current unencumbered Driver’s Licence
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Effective communication skills, critical thinking skills and analytical skills.
  • Ability to plan and work effectively and efficiently and with a minimum of supervision.
