We are currently seeking an Operational Readiness – Reliability Engineer to join our team, on a Fixed-Term (Two-Year) contract to fill a position for our Simberi Operation. This position will be based in Port Moresby and will be working Monday to Friday. Site travel will be required occasionally.

Reporting to the Manager – Planning & Reliability, this role will provide technical reliability expertise in relation to master data development in Pronto for all new assets installed as part of the New Simberi Gold Project. The purpose is to ensure that master data is developed based on reliability centred principals and in compliance with Pronto standards in order for the expanded plant to safely achieve high equipment availability and asset utilisation in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision and Values.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities 

  • Ensure safe work practices by identifying hazards, reporting risks, and adhering to health and safety standards to protect self and others when visiting site.
  • Reliability support on the master data development for the New Simberi Gold Project.
  • Development of Asset Management Plans for all new equipment listed in Mechanical, Electrical and Instrument equipment lists.
  • Apply reliability engineering techniques and tools (RCM, FMEA) to optimise Asset Management Plans.
  • Review existing Asset Management Plans for life of mine equipment and propose updates based on full downtime and data analysis.
  • Assist with the development of master data upload sheets specifically in relation to full spare parts catalogues, ANSIs for recommended spare parts and spares bill of materials for PM tasks. Review and sign off all upload sheets for quality checks and accuracy of data prior to upload.
  • Ensure Asset Management Plan data is complete and is able to be converted to accurate and executable PMs. Ensure all failure modes are accurately translated into PMs.
  • Ensure existing data for similar equipment at Simberi is analysed for failure modes and ensure these are addressed in any new PMs developed.
  • Champion the inclusion of condition-monitoring data (vibration, oil, thermography, NDT) to inform maintenance planning, condition-based maintenance, and replacement decisions.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, and procurement to translate Asset Management Plans into actionable PM tasks in Pronto.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements in all Asset Management Plans.
  • Make recommendations for the removal of redundant equipment and spare parts from Pronto as required.
  • Oversee commissioning and documentation of new and rebuilt equipment, ensuring functionality and reliability meet specifications.
  • Contribute to building operational readiness team capabilities, ensuring work meets requirements, and support professional development initiatives.
  • Participate in strategic asset management including life cycle asset management (LCAM) and risk management related to future business continuity.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams and contractors, fostering collaboration, communication, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Follow project governance frameworks (e.g., Simberi Project Charter) including business case development, scope definition, risk assessment, stakeholder engagement, and reporting.

  • Managing effective use of available resources, including own time, in support of the delivery of the team/crew.

  • Sharing knowledge and contributing to the development of capability within the operational readiness team.
  • Contributing to an effective team in a remote working environment.
  • Ensuring own work performance meets all role requirements; and taking appropriate professional development actions.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Efficient MS Word, MS Excel
  • Bachelor of Engineering in related engineering field
  • At least 5 years relevant site experience with sound knowledge of RCM principles
  • Strong ability to work effectively within a team and work to tight deadlines
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating with people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to manage multiple priorities in a day

Desirable

  • Asset Strategy and PM development on a greenfields or brownfields site
  • Strong skills in computerized maintenance management systems, maintenance planning best practices, and relevant technical knowledge. Pronto experience highly regarded
  • Familiarity with risk management and quality assurance training
