Job Summary

We are currently seeking to recruit a Senior Mining Engineer to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations on Simberi Island in New Ireland Province of PNG.

The Role

The Senior Mining Engineer reports to the Mine Technical Services Superintendent, and the primary responsibility of the role is to lead the mine planning team and to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of technical support for Mining Operations.

This is a FIFO position, with a 15:13 roster. Point of Hire available: Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Tabar Islands Group, Alotau, Buka, Goroka, Hoskins, Madang, Popondetta and Wapenamanda.

Key responsibilities include:

Technical Accountabilities

  • Ensure safe work practices, own health and safety and all other workers by identifying hazards and ensuring issues and risks are reported and addressed.
  • Develop and maintain a suite of fit-for-purpose systems, processes, and procedures in place in the short to medium planning space which are being operated appropriately.
  • Ensure your team produces timely, optimised, and accurate mine plans for Mining Operations including infrastructure, mining methods, equipment, designs, schedules, and financials.
  • Lead the team to provide timely and accurate tracking, reporting, and analysis of daily, weekly, and monthly mining related production data.
  • Develop and drive MTS and Mining improvement Initiatives.
  • Coach, mentor and train the mine planning team to ensure tasks are consistently completed to a high standard and we provide a consistently high level of support to mining operations.

Scheduling Accountabilities

  • Ensuring that Short to Medium Term schedules for Simberi assets derive from St Barbara LOM Strategic and business plans to realise maximum return on asset.
  • Ensure all plans and schedules (Short Term and Medium Term) are safe, efficient, and realistic and are prepared and communicated in a timely manner.

Drill and Blast Accountabilities

  • Coordinate the planning and design of blast holes, tie ups and charging plans as required and provide technical support to the Drill & Blast Team.
  • Ensure that the team provides a high level of planning and scheduling of drill and blast operations in line with the short term mine plan and integrate this work with other planning and operational areas.
  • Actively engage with the production team to communicate designs and plans to ensure that the drill & blast processes are optimised.

Learning and Development Accountabilities

  • Contribute to building and developing an effective team.
  • Assist with the training and development of the team.
  • Manage your professional learning and development to develop in current role and for future roles.

 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience required:

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • A current Police Clearance Certificate
  • A current PNG Class 6 Driver’s Licence
  • A degree qualification in mining engineering or related discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in mine planning preferably in an open cut truck & shovel mining operation
  • Experience with mine planning software required with Deswik experience highly desirable.
  • Good written, oral communication skills
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • A collaborator focused on achieving tasks required to make the team successful.
  • A sound awareness of operational safety issues and excellent personal safety record
