We are currently seeking to recruit a Graduate Mining Engineer to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations in Simberi Island in New Ireland Province.

The Role

The Graduate Mining Engineer reports to the Senior Mining Engineer, and the primary role is to assist Mine Planning with providing safe designs, implementing drilling and blasting plans and undertaking other production engineering requirements in the Technical Services department.

This is a FIFO position, with a 15/13 roster. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen / Buka/Madang/Goroka/Alotau/Wapenamanda/ Popondetta/ Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands.

The key roles and responsibilities include:

Technical accountabilities

  • Assist the mine planning team to develop short to medium term schedules and forecasts in line with company targets and objectives.
  • Support the mining operations team to achieve production targets by providing technical support in terms of mine design and planning.
  • Assist the mine planning team in the development and implementation of mine planning and scheduling system, processes, and procedures.
  • Assist the senior mining engineer with their efforts to ensure that the mine planning team provides a consistently high level of support to mining operations at Simberi.
  • In conjunction the mine planning, survey and geology teams assist with the coordination of daily mining and planning activities to ensure they are conducted in a manner which allows safe and efficient mining operations.
  • With the support of the Technical Services team track, report and analyse mining related production data for daily, weekly, and monthly report.

Drill and Blast

  • Assist with the planning and design of blast holes, tie ups and charging plans as required and provide technical support to the Drill & Blast Team.
  • Assist with the planning and scheduling of drill and blast operations in line with the short term mine plan and integrate this work with other planning and operational areas.
  • With the support of the planning team, actively engage with the production team to communicate designs and plans to ensure that the drill & blast processes are optimised.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience required:

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Bachelor’s Engineering Degree in Mining Engineering.
  • Current unencumbered Driver’s Licence
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team.
  • A high level of written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and work effectively and efficiently and with a minimum of supervision.
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals

Desirable

  • Some work experience in open pit mine planning.
  • Some knowledge of mine design software, preferably Deswik CAD.
  • Some experience with drill and blast
  • Some exposure with mine scheduling software
