We are currently seeking a Graduate Environment Officer to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the Environment Supervisor, the primary purpose of this role is Implement, improve and drive the field monitoring and sampling programs and procedures on site to ensure quality data is available for reporting against applicable legal and other requirements.

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

1. EMMP Implementation

  • Ensuring and monitoring safety in the workplace by identifying and addressing hazards, participating in improving safety and ensuring all reporting requirements are completed.
  • Implementation of Environmental Management and Monitoring Programs (Marine / Terrestrial) within required schedules and recording field data by employing QAQC initiatives.
  • Assist the EMMP team leaders to ensure all monitoring equipment are regularly quality checked and operational. Take timely action to address equipment defects.
  • Maintain an up-to-date equipment and consumables inventory and ensure adequate stock is available for tasks and monitoring programs.
  • Assist Environment Officer in developing and or reviewing procedures, forms, checklist, registers to document the process involved in undertaking monitoring activities.
  • Contribute to the identification of innovative solutions to improve environmental performance and assist Environment Officer with implementation and management of Environment Improvement Projects on site.
  • Conduct scheduled environmental audits / inspections and report findings with appropriate corrective actions management to closure.
  • Assist Environment Officer and Senior Environment Officer in organizing and delivering environment training programs to raise awareness among employees and contractors about environmental responsibilities, regulations, and best practice.
  • Support the Environment team in responding to environment incidents or complaints, including participating in investigations, implementing corrective actions, and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Assist with compilation and management of administrative and technical data, such as field monitoring data and Sample Register.
  • Attend to administrative tasks as requested by your supervisor and or as required by the Department.

2. Training

  • Managing effective use of available resources, including own time, in support of the delivery of the Simberi EMMP
  • Participate in training provided by the business

3. Health & Safety

  • Comply with established Health and Safety policies and practices.
  • Take responsibility for the reporting of incidents, including any injury or near miss to the to your appropriate supervisor or the health and safety team in a timely manner
  • Regularly communicate with subordinates regarding new health & safety initiative  and or statistics

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Ability to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes.
  • Current unencumbered PNG Class 6 Driver’s Licence
  • Undergraduate degree in science or equivalent technical qualification and or experience.
  • At least 3 years relevant extractive industry experience
  • Proficient and fully conversant in all Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Ability to multitask and play a key role within a demanding and challenging environment.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Proven problem-solving capability and prepared to accept responsibility.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant environment acts and regulations
  • Strong administration and coordination capability.

 Desirable

  • Dive competency with DAN Dive Certification would be an advantage.
