We are currently seeking a Safety Advisor Trainer to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Buka, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Health & Safety Supervisor, this role is responsible to provide effective and responsible Safety training and a consistently high standard of assessment across our Simberi Operations. Working predominantly with open pit Operators, Maintenance Technicians (Mechanical and Electrical) and a variety of mining professionals, you will be making impactful change on our valued workforce.

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.
The opportunity
Technical accountabilities
- Proactively lead our safety culture through your training, assessment, and verification of competency programs across various high-risk activities; operational procedures and permit to work programs.
- Partner on-the-job with our employees to coach and contribute to improvements to their safe working methods and operation of equipment.
- Be a subject matter leader on our Critical Risk Control standards and develop safe operating methods not limited to Confined Space entry, operation of Plant, Equipment and Power Tools, Isolation and Permit to Work procedures, Mobile Equipment and Explosives.
- Manage the planning and scheduling (including compliance/refresher requirements) to keep our employees up to date and fully competent to perform their daily responsibilities.
- Utilise our company training management system effectively to provide monthly safety training reports for our management teams.
- Ensuring all statutory requirements of the role are met; specifically, our obligations relating to Classified Plant, Mines Safety legislation and the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.
Scheduling accountabilities
- Managing effective use of available resources, including own time to achieve the required outcomes.
- Assist in the implementation of the HSS Department objectives to achieve its Strategic plans.
People accountabilities
- Ensuring own work performance meets all role requirements; and taking appropriate professional development actions.

Essential
- Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- Formal Safety Qualifications
- Expert understanding of the critical risk areas in an operating open-pit mining environment
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in mining in addition to your Safety experience
- Confident and conversant with statutory training and assessment requirements
- Presentation and interpersonal skills to facilitate group training session
- Current PNG Drivers Class 6 License
- High level of computer literacy (MS Office, TMS, Pronto, INX, HSE management systems)
Desirable
- Certificate IV Training & Assessment qualification
