We are currently seeking an Health Extension Officer to join our team, this is a fixed term position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo & the Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent, the Health Extension Officer is responsible for supporting the health, safety, and wellbeing of personnel at exploration sites. This role ensures compliance with occupational health standards, promotes health awareness, and implements preventative measures to maintain a safe and healthy working environment. The officer also provides first-line health support, monitoring, and reporting, contributing to the overall operational efficiency and safety culture of the exploration team.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities 

  • Conduct routine health assessments and monitoring of site personnel.
  • Implement and maintain occupational health programs in line with company standards and legal requirements.
  • Ensure accurate recording, reporting, and analysis of health data, incidents, and trends.
  • Provide guidance on health hazards, risk mitigation, and preventative measures.
  • Support incident investigations and follow-up actions to prevent recurrence.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Plan and coordinate health monitoring schedules for all exploration personnel.
  • Schedule and conduct training, inductions, and health awareness sessions.
  • Ensure timely reporting of health checks, medical assessments, and compliance audits.
  • Coordinate with operational teams to align health activities with exploration schedules without disrupting production

People accountabilities

  • Provide guidance, coaching, and support to exploration staff on health and safety matters.
  • Promote a culture of health awareness and safe working practices across the workforce.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and management to address health concerns and implement improvements.
  • Act as a first point of contact for health-related queries and issues on site.

Financial accountabilities

  • Monitor and manage the health program budget for exploration sites, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Ensure proper procurement and utilization of medical supplies, PPE, and health-related equipment.
  • Report any variances in allocated budget or unexpected expenditures to management.
  • Contribute to cost-saving initiatives without compromising safety or compliance standards.

We would love to hear from you if you have​:

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in health Extension Studies or a relevant field of allied health.
  • Current registration and a valid practicing license with the relevant medical board.
  • Proven experience as a Health Extension Officer, with several years in a remote, rural, or mining environment preferred.
  • Experience in emergency response, including skills in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and trauma care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • A positive attitude toward safety and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality

Desirable

  • Willingness to work in remote exploration sites on a FIFO roster.
  • Ability to adapt to challenging conditions and maintain professionalism under pressure.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for site travel
