We are currently seeking a Lead Geotechnician to join our team. Permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Lead Geotechnician, is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing management of the Geotechnical Monitoring Systems such as Prisms, Vibrating Wire Piezometers and plan for the other LOM Monitoring systems as mining progresses. The role will also assist in actively identifying risks, hazards and reporting and support the Simberi Operations consistent with the Company’s Vision, Values and policies.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Safety leader.
  • Assist with the development, planning, implementation and ongoing management of the Geotechnical Monitoring Systems such as Prisms, Vibrating Wire Piezometers and plan for the other LOM Monitoring systems such as Radars, Inclinometers and other ground control monitoring systems as required.
  • Undertake various tasks relating to geotechnical management including wall design and excavation compliance, documentation of inspections and data collection.
  • Assist with the proactive communication of geotechnical issues in mining to the workforce and management.
  • Assist the Senior Geotechnical Engineer in the creation of the Geotechnical Engineering Section’s annual Budget.
  • Conduct and partake in projects as required by the mine to assess ground conditions and provide appropriate advice and recommendations.
  • Assist the Senior Geotechnical Engineer to develop the LOM Monitoring Plan.
  • Actively identify, report and manage geotechnical risks within the operation and develop and maintain systems to monitor and manage these.
  • Assist with major hazard reporting and regular communication of surface related risks to various stakeholders
  • Assist in the development of the appropriate geotechnical monitoring procedures and standards and ensure that the workforce is suitably trained
  • Work closely with mine operations technical services teams to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. 

Safety & Teamwork

  • Ensure mining safety practices are observed and adhered to every day whilst conducting mine technical services functions of the mining operations.
  • Immediately report any actual or potential unsafe conditions or activities, mishaps, incidents, accidents, injuries, or illnesses in the workplace to the Supervisor or Head of Department
  • Complying with instructions given pertaining to the use of personal protective clothing, equipment or gear or any matter in relation to health and safety.
  • Comply with established OH&S policies and practices and regularly communicate and discuss new OH&S initiatives.
  • Actively participate in toolbox meetings and safety meetings.
  • Personally demonstrate a positive attitude towards working safely.

  • Assist with the training and development of the team including graduate geotechnical engineers.
  • Ensure own work performance meets all role requirements.
  • Manage your professional learning and development to develop in current role and for future roles.

We would love to hear from you if you have​:

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Ability to produce a PNG National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes
  • Current unencumbered Papua New Guinea’s ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence
  • A degree/Diploma qualification in electronics, telecommunication or related discipline
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in the mining industry, with appropriate experience in the geotechnical engineering
  • Experience user of Geotechnical Monitoring systems (software and hardware).
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Strong technical communication and influencing skills 

Desirable

  • Relevant resources industry work experience
  • Experience using Deswik software desirable
  • Strong track record in geotechnical monitoring systems and processes
  • Experience in planning and implementing geotechnical monitoring systems
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Ability to lead a group of geotechnical technicians / assistants.
