The Role

Reporting to the Electrical Supervisor, the incumbent will perform the functions of an Electrician in a safe and environmentally friendly manner, including installation & maintenance for all electrical equipment and instrumentation equipment within the plant site operations. The ideal candidate must be qualified and experienced in performing routine maintenance on equipment, as well as troubleshooting electrical problems.

This is a FIFO position; the roster is 15/13. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen or Tabar group of Islands.

The key roles and responsibilities include:

  • Maintain availability and reliability of the mine sites electrical equipment, generators, power distribution systems, switch rooms, and motor control centres
  • Communicates exceptionally within the team and in cross functional works with other departmental sections and groups.
  • Ensure and maintain safe work standards and practices in accordance with Simberi HSE safety standards and Mine Safety Regulations for all tasks performed
  • Ensuring own Health & Safety as well as that of all other workers, identifying and maintaining safe work practices and completing all required safety training
  • Respond to routine, breakdown, and emergency calls for repair and services at plant site services, and process plant, and camps as and when required
  • Support training of electrical trades to effectively monitor and maintain the electrical systems at plant site operations, with reference to the electrical components
  • Ensure all electrical works are carried out in compliance with regulated electrical standards; PNG Codes, Mine Safety Act and Regulations, AS/NZS 3000. AS/NZS 3008 and industry best practice
  • Implement and uphold Simberi HSE Safety policies, standard operating procedures, regulations, cardinal rules, to ensure Simberi is a safe working environment  

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • A licensed electrician with 5 years or more work experience in a mining environment.
  • HV switching certification will be an advantage
  • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations and guidelines
  • Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics
  • Ability to train maintenance personnel in all aspects of their trade
  • Must be a self-starter with good problem skills
  • Flexible, adaptable and be a team player
  • Clear spoken and written English
  • Must have current PNG power license
