We are currently seeking a Safety Advisor /Trainer to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Buka, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. Reporting to the Health & Safety Supervisor, this role is responsible to provide effective and responsible Safety training and a consistently high standard of assessment across our Simberi Operations. Working predominantly with open pit Operators, Maintenance Technicians (Mechanical and Electrical) and a variety of mining professionals, you will be making impactful change on our valued workforce.

The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.
The opportunity
Technical accountabilities
- To assist the OH&S Officers in ensuring compliance to SGCL OH&S policies, procedures and regulations are in place
- Assist to promote occupational health and safety within the organisation and develop safer and healthier ways of working
- Assist to inspect machinery and equipment, such as lifting devices, machine shields and scaffolding, to make sure they meet safety regulations
- Putting up Safety signage
- Assist to work with engineers and other professionals to ensure the safety of worksites
- Assist to make sure that personal protective equipment, such as dust masks, safety glasses, footwear and safety helmets, is being used in workplaces according to regulations
- Assist to make sure that dangerous materials are correctly stored
- Assist to identify and test work areas for potential accident and health hazards, such as toxic fumes and explosive gas-air mixtures, and implement appropriate control measures
- Assist to make sure that the organisation is aware of, and complies with, all legislation relating to its workplace activities and the use of its plant, equipment and substances
- Assist to help supervise the investigation of accidents and unsafe working conditions, study possible causes and recommend remedial action
- Assist to conduct training sessions for management, supervisors and workers on health and safety practices and legislation
- Assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries and make sure they experience a satisfactory return to work
- Assist to coordinate emergency procedures, mine rescues, firefighting and first aid crews
- Assist to communicate frequently with management to report on the status of the occupational health and safety program
- Assist to develop occupational health and safety systems, including policies, procedures and manuals.
- Assist to maintain good housekeeping within your designated activity area
- Assist to carry out other duties as directed by the OH&S Superintendent or the OH&S Supervisor
Scheduling accountabilities
- Comply with established environmentally sustainable measures so as to not adversely impact on the natural fauna, flora, freshwater resources and marine life within the bounds of Simberi Island
- Record and report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near misses to the Supervisor
- Comply with established OH&S policies and practices
- Take responsibility for reporting of incidents, including any injury or near miss to the OH&S Department and Safety Committee in a timely manner
- Regularly communicate with subordinates regarding new OH&S initiatives and OH&S statistics
- Record and report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near misses to the Supervisor
- Comply with established OH&S policies and practices
- Take responsibility for reporting of incidents, including any injury or near miss to the OH&S Department and Safety Committee in a timely manner
- Regularly communicate with subordinates regarding new OH&S initiatives and OH&S statistics

- Participate in training provided by the business.
- Work with and develop the community through the support of company initiatives.

Essential
- Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- Tertiary qualification related to or relevant to the role
- Relevant Industry certificate or diploma in WHS
- An excellent knowledge of Emergency response and Mine Rescue
- At least 4 years relevant Mining Industry experience
- Demonstrated experience and competency in leading teams
- A good knowledge of the Mine Industry and operations
- An understanding of competency-based training and assessment
- Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines
- Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building; conflict resolution & training
- Current PNG Drivers Class 6 License
- Knowledge of statutory training/assessment requirements
- Demonstrated high level of computer literacy (MS Office, TMS, Pronto, INX, HSE management systems)
Desirable
- Cert IV Workplace Health & Safety
