Job Summary

We are currently seeking to recruit two Senior Exploration Geologists to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations in Simberi Island in New Ireland Province.

The Role

Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent, the Senior Exploration Geologist will contribute to leading St Barbara’s exploration activities at Simberi, Papua New Guinea in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision, business strategy, Values, policies and compliance obligations.

This is a FIFO position for a six-month period; the roster is a 21/14 roster. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng/Rabaul/Port Moresby/Lae/Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta & Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply)

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical accountabilities

  • Proper planning and assistance with managing FY24 Simberi Sulphide drilling program.
  • Producing high quality geological outputs (e.g., QA/QC management, core logging, and core sampling).
  • Providing timely, accurate and relevant drill reporting (daily, weekly and monthly) to the Exploration manager - Simberi, Exploration Superintendent and other internal and external parties as appropriate.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Managing effective and efficient use of the available resources including own time, in support of the development and delivery of the FY24 Simberi Sulphide drilling program plans.
  • Ensuring the work performance of self and direct reports meets all role and business plan requirements.
  • Coaching and developing the Exploration personnel in Level 1 roles.
  • Maintaining good relations with the communities within which we work.

Health & Safety accountabilities

  • Ensure your own Health and Safety as well as the Health and Safety of other members of the Exploration team and Project contractors through compliance with statutory regulations and St Barbara’s Health, Safety and Environment Policies, Procedures and Standards.
  • Demonstrate a proactive commitment to HSE excellence through frequent Visual Leadership observations and by attending and taking an active role in pre-start meetings.

Qualifications, skills, and experience required:

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • A BSc degree in a relevant geoscience discipline
  • Between 7 to 15 years relevant and successful experience in the mining industry
  • Previous experience using 3D modelling software and an ability to efficiently learn and operate Micromine software to manage drill
  • A demonstrated strong capability in applying Health, Safety and Environment Policies, Procedures and Standards to exploration
  • Sound knowledge of exploration and diamond drilling techniques including and trenching
  • Able to supervise the geologists to maintain best practice exploration procedures
  • Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people
  • Experience using Mapinfo-Discover and a 3D software package
