Job Summary

We are currently seeking to recruit a Senior Mining Engineer – Strategic Planning to join our highly dynamic workforce within our Simberi Operations in Simberi Island in New Ireland Province.

The Role

The Senior Mining Engineer – Strategic Planning reports to the Superintendent Technical Services and the primary role is to develop optimised, accurate and consistent long-term plans and designs in line with St. Barbara’s business strategy. The role will also provide technical and processional leadership and support to the Simberi Operations, which will be consistent with the Company’s Vision, Values and policies.

This is a FIFO position, with a 21/14 roster. Point of Hire available: Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Tabar Islands Group, Alotau, Buka, Goroka, Hoskins, Madang, Popondetta and Wapenamanda.(Locals are encouraged to apply).

Role Accountabilities

Technical Accountabilities

  • Safety leader within the Mine Technical Services (MTS) and Simberi Operations
  • Ensure there are a suite of fit-for-purpose systems in place in the long-term planning space which are being operated appropriately.
  • Ensure the delivery of timely, optimised and accurate forecasts,budgets and life of mine (LOM) plans for the Simberi Operations.
  • Pit optimisation, pit and mine design.
  • Undertaking scenario and project analysis to support approvals, cut-off grade estimations, reserve reporting, and life extension opportunities.
  • Technical auditing and projects evaluation of Simberi operating mine and assets in the Simberi province for mining best practice.
  • Engaging stakeholders to understand business-wide objectives and constraints to inform assumptions, decisions, and limitations when developing LOM and strategic mine plans.
  • Key participant in the creation of the Simberi’s annual Budget.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to all stakeholders.
  • Coordinate or participate in major mining projects associated with MTS, Mining Operations and Contractors.
  • Propose and Drive MTS and Mining improvement Initiatives.
  • Maintain effective communication and interaction with Mining Operations, Site Leadership team and other key stake holders. 

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Ensuring that long term plans for Simberi assets derived from St Barbara LOM Strategic and business plans, realise maximum return on asset.
  • Manage the effective use of available resources.
  • Ensure all plans and schedules (Forecasts and LOMs) are released to the group in a timely manner.
  • Meet the milestones required during the annual planning cycle. 

People accountabilities

  • Coordinate resources for the effective delivery of all mining requirements
  • Provide direction and leadership for mining engineers, graduate engineers and others 

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience required:

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara Values
  • Ability to produce a PNG National Police Clearance (valid within the last 3 months) for site access purposes
  • Current unencumbered Papua New Guinea’s ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence
  • A degree qualification in a mining in mining engineering or related discipline
  • At least five (10) years’ experience in the mining industry, with appropriate experience in the mining industry
  • High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
  • Strong technical communication and influencing skills 

 Desirable

  • Relevant resources industry work experience
  • Strong track record in mine planning and mine production
  • Experience undertaking mining studies and project work
  • Experience user of Mine design/planning and scheduling software’s
  • Previous Experience in a similar role
  • Previous exposure to mine operations training with mining crew
  • Ability to lead a group of technical professionals
  • Possess a Metalliferous Mine Managers Certificate of competency or having the ability to obtain one
