We are currently seeking a Health Extension Officer to join our team, permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo, or Tabar group of Islands. The Health Extension Officer is responsible for providing high-quality primary healthcare services to all mine employees, contractors, and, in some cases, the surrounding community. The HEO manages the clinic's day-to-day clinical operations under the supervision of a Site Medical Officer, ensuring efficient and effective patient care, especially during medical emergencies. This role requires a strong focus on medical emergency response, clinical practice, occupational health, and public health programs within the isolated and high-risk mining environment.

Everyone at St Barbara Limited is required to understand and act in accordance with St Barbara’s values and policies and meet all relevant internal and external compliance obligations. The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

The Opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Perform duties in a safe and professional manner.
  • Be prepared to respond to emergencies, ensure that the Trauma Pack and rescue equipment is prepared for immediate response to an emergency call.
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat patient illnesses, including prescribing medications and performing minor surgical procedures.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's condition.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
  • Direct and supervise a particular unit on one shift.
  • Carry out pre-employment medical checks.
  • Carry out awareness to employees and local communities on topics such as health education, disease prevention and develop and implement health improvement programs.
  • Assist the Site Medical Officer to maintain appropriate stock levels of medical supplies.
  • Promote and adhere to the company’s internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards by consistently maintaining a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
  • Comply with established OH&S policies and practices.

Scheduling Accountabilities

  • Assist with the implementation of the Simberi Gold Mine Clinic Strategic Objectives and assist the HSS Department achieve its Strategic plans. 

People Accountabilities

  • Ensuring own performance meets all role requirements.
  • Ensure staff resources are maximised and staff members undertake appropriate training and development so they are skilled efficiently to perform allocated duties.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Health Extension Studies or a relevant field of allied health
  • Current registration and a valid practicing license with the PNG medical board
  • Proven experience as a Health Extension Officer, with several years in a remote, rural, or mining environment preferred
  • Experience in emergency response, including skills in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and trauma care
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce
  • A positive attitude toward safety and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality
