We are currently seeking a Payroll Supervisor to join our team. permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation, based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The successful candidate will work from our Port Moresby office and play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services across the operation.

Reporting to the Manager Human Resources & Training, the main purpose of this position is to oversee and coordinate the payroll process for Simberi employees ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and Company processes while supporting Simberi Operations and St Barbara.

The opportunity

Technical Accountabilities

  • Ensuring own Health and Safety as well as that of other workers, identifying and maintaining safe work practices and completing all required safety training.
  • Providing professional and proactive customer service and communication to employees and stakeholders, including timely resolution of queries and payroll inbox management. 
  • Planning and accurate actioning of fortnightly payroll activities to ensure timely preparation and processing of regular pay runs, allowing sufficient time for checking, approvals and on-time payments.
  • Updating payroll system data with accuracy, including entry of new starters, processing of terminations, changes to employee details, and position details, while ensuring regular reviews of data currency of information and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Calculating and processing leave and entitlements accurately, ensuring compliance with Company policies and procedures, and ensuring legislative compliance and applications/requests are appropriately authorised.
  • Undertaking end of month and end financial year payroll activities for relevant jurisdictions, including finalisation of STP and timely preparation of payment summaries/letters for distribution, and reconciliations including addressing any identified issues.
  • Processing superannuation payments by due dates, including set up and maintenance of records in SuperEzy, as well as calculating and notifying of superannuation caps for high income employees.
  • Calculating all exit payments, long service leave balances, leave adjustments, back payments and adjustments, and assist with calculation of bonuses as required.
  • Processing tax payments in accordance with relevant jurisdictional requirements to ensure receipt by payment deadlines, including maintaining update records and completing reconciliations.
  • Processing payments including Government payments, workers compensation payments on a monthly basis, and taking appropriate action and processing of employee benefits including salary sacrificing and allowances in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Supporting the salary review process by contributing to worksheet development, ensuring data entry of new salary information and back payment calculations.
  • Contributing to the development, maintenance and review of payroll processes, guidelines, templates, checklists and forms to reflect changes to legislation or payroll processes.
  • Reporting including running of the HR Monthly Report, reports for Finance team, and ad hoc reports as requested.
  • Providing coaching and training for payroll officers especially new payroll officers or secondments and support across Human Resources Systems and processes as required.
  • Ensuring Payruns are run on time as per the agreed schedule

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Tertiary qualification in a related discipline and/or certificate level qualifications with payroll exposure, or relevant professional payroll experience in a similar role
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge to conduct end-to-end payroll activities including undertaking payroll calculations
  • Strong understanding of payroll and relevant HR legislation that supports the Payroll and Human Resources processes
  • Demonstrated reporting experience including deriving and presenting HR metrics to support business processes, with a strong focus on accuracy and quality of data
  • Strong MS Excel skills including demonstrated understanding of formulas and functions
  • Excellent professional customer services skills, with strong verbal and written communication skills, including communicating with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to effectively plan, prioritize work and meet tight deadlines while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail

 Desirable

  • Significant experience with Pronto payroll system
