Who we are

Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) is the nation’s leading voice on exercise and sports science. We govern and represent over 10,000 university-qualified accredited exercise professionals who support Australians to reach their health and performance goals.

What you will do

We currently have an opportunity for an Appointed Director to join our Board, for a term of up to three years. The Director role is a strategic position within ESSA, responsible for governing the organisation.


What you will bring

We are ideally seeking candidates with prior involvement on a significant not-for-profit board or equivalent experience. Our new Board Director will have extensive experience in one or more of our priority areas:

  • Expertise in technology, AI, and innovation
  • Strong business acumen
  • Experience within regulatory environments
  • Sports science qualification/s or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of sports governance and the sports landscape within Australia.

Applicants must be eligible to be appointed as a Director in Australia in accordance with ASIC and ACNC stipulations.

New Directors will be supported to attend the AICD Foundations of Directorship Course to upskill their governance knowledge if required.


What you will commit to

1. Attendance at Board meetings approximately every second month, primarily on the fourth Friday of the month.

  • Full day in-person meetings ~3 per year, which may be held at varying locations throughout Australia.
  • Videoconferences (approximately 6 hrs. in duration) ~3-5 per year

2. Participation in a Board Committee, if appointed.

  • Each committee meets ~6 times a year for 1-2 hours via videoconference.

3. Attendance at Board strategic workshops, ~1 per year held in person over 1-2 days.

4. Attendance at annual general meeting, which may be held in-person or online once per year.

5. Attendance at annual major event (conference/forum) at varying locations throughout Australia.

6. Out of session work e.g. reading, discussions, voting and extraordinary meetings (approximately 2-4 days per month).

The role is modestly remunerated from an aggregated annual remuneration pool (indexed annually) payable to all ESSA Directors and all related expenses are paid.
