The Australian Flying Disc Association Limited (AFDA) is the peak organisation for disc sports in Australia. It provides services for its members at the national and international level.

AFDA is seeking experienced and passionate people to contribute to the governance of flying disc sport in Australia.

The Role

The AFDA Board is primarily responsible for ensuring AFDA fulfils its purpose of growing participation and strengthening flying disc sports in Australia by:

  • providing strategic direction for AFDA;
  • ensuring effective oversight of the Chief Executive Officer; and
  • ensuring compliance with all legal, statutory and constitutional requirements.

An AFDA Director contributes to the governance, strategic direction and oversight of the organisation while upholding high standards of integrity and acting in the interests of Member Organisations, athletes, volunteers and the wider flying disc community.

In meeting these responsibilities AFDA Directors are required to:

  • prepare for, attend and actively participate in Board meetings, strategic planning workshops and annual general meetings;
  • participate in, or sponsor, at least one board committee or project working group;
  • to the extent practicable, attend (at least once annually) a national tournament run by the AFDA.

Appointed Directors may also be requested to chair or lead Board committees where their expertise aligns with committee responsibilities.

  • be able to think strategically and contribute to long-term organisational planning;
  • be financially literate and able to interpret budgets, financial reports and risk assessments;
  • satisfy all legal eligibility requirements to act as a company director under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth);
  • be willing to complete any screening checks required under AFDA’s Child Safe and governance policies; and
  • be independent of AFDA Member Organisations and other material relationships that could reasonably be perceived to influence their judgement.

Directors are expected to exercise independent judgement, maintain confidentiality and declare and appropriately manage any conflicts of interest in accordance with AFDA governance policies.

In line with AFDA’s commitment to good governance and ensuring the board is comprised of an appropriate mix of skills and experience, the following will be prioritised:

  • qualifications and/or experience in sports governance; and
  • qualifications and/or experience in public relations, marketing, communications, branding or sponsorship.
