Bowls Australia (BA) is the national sporting organisation responsible for the leadership, development and management of lawn bowls in Australia.
BA is a not-for-profit organisation governed by a voluntary board that provides the strategic direction for the sport and the strategies that are implemented by the staff at the national office.
Following a resignation, BA is calling for applications for an Appointed Director position on its Board.
The Role
BA’s Board comprises up to nine Directors – five Elected and four Appointed – and its current composition can be found here: https://bowls.com.au/about-ba/board-of-directors/. The remainder of the term of this casual vacancy runs through to the next BA AGM 2026 in October, after which it is then up for consideration/appointment by the Board for a further three (3) years. Directors can serve a maximum of nine (9) years.
Criteria
- Eligibility to serve as a Board Director under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth.) and the BA Constitution
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of best practice organisational governance and especially:
- (i) The leadership role of a Board, and of its Directors (relevant to of a company of ~$10M annual turnover and 35-40 FTE staff)
- (ii) The financial management and planning of such a business
- (iii) The capacity to focus on strategic rather than operational issues, and corresponding ability to distinguish between matters for the Board and matters for management
- (iv) The development of innovative ideas
- (v) The cooperation and teamwork of a Board of Directors
- (vi) The understanding of the value of diversity and inclusion to good governance
- (vii) The work and meeting preparations, and availability and time commitment, of a Board Director.
- An appreciation for, and understanding of, the role that community through to high performance sport plays in Australia.
- A knowledge of, involvement in, and affinity for the sport of Bowls will be highly regarded but is not essential in this instance.
- A proven successful background in one or both of the following specific areas identified as current and future priorities for the BA Board:
- Strategic Digital Leadership
- Data, Cyber and Technology Governance and Leveraging
