Who we are

Waterski & Wakeboard Australia is the governing body responsible for participation in towed water sports from junior levels through to elite competition.

We have a long history of sporting success and honour the accomplishments of our athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers. Promoting a culture of safety, our organisation seeks to unite families and people of all ages to enjoy the benefits of the sport, where people feel valued and connected to our purpose.


The role

The Independent Chair is responsible for leading the Nominations Committee and ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of the nominations process.

This includes:

  • Developing and applying a board skills matrix to guide candidate selection
  • Leading the process for calling for and evaluating nominations for WAWA Board positions
  • Coordinating interviews and reference checks
  • Providing recommendations to the WAWA Board and Members
  • Ensuring succession planning and promoting a diverse, skilled Board
  • Facilitating effective committee meetings and communication with stakeholders

The Independent Chair must be free of any interests or associations that may influence, or be perceived to influence, their ability to provide independent judgment.

This is a voluntary position. However, approved expenses associated with meeting attendance (e.g. travel or accommodation) will be covered by WAWA. The term of appointment is for a minimum of 12 months, up to three years. 


What we are looking for

We are seeking an individual with one or more of the following:

  • Experience in Human Recourses
  • Demonstrated experience chairing a Nominations Committee or other type of subcommittee
  • A sound understanding of best practice governance and the workings of not-for-profit boards
  • Leadership and communication skills to foster a collaborative and independent committee environment
  • Strong people skills, emotional intelligence, and integrity
  • An appreciation for sport governance and experience within sporting or member-based organisations

The Nominations Committee meets at least four times annually, with increased activity around WAWA’s Board election process and AGM.
