About the Opportunity

The Indigenous Peer Support Officer will foster and promote a sense of well-being amongst the prisoner cohort by the provision of a service which instils harmony, understanding, support and reduces the levels of distress and incidents of self-harm amongst prisoners.

What you’ll be doing 

  • Implement, co-ordinate and manage the Peer Support Prisoner (PSP) team within the Prison.
  • Ensure interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) prisoners are specific or adapted to meet cultural needs
  • Contribute to the multidisciplinary management of prisoners requiring additional support through communication with relevant custodial staff and contributing to Prison Risk Assessment Group (PRAG)
  • Act as a positive role model to all staff, prisoners and visitors, treating all with whom he/she comes into contact with respect and decency.
  • Ensure interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) prisoners are specific or adapted to meet cultural needs
  • Ensure the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody are incorporated into Operating Procedures and practices and are updated as required
  • Participation with Aboriginal Support Groups with regular meetings in the Facility with links to Aboriginal service organisations outside
  • Facilitate ATSI prisoners access to recognised Elders

About you - your ideal skills & experience 

  • Relevant industry experience OR Tertiary qualifications in either Social Work, Counselling, Social Sciences
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from a range of cultural backgrounds
  • Cultural awareness including understanding the impact and management of different ethnic backgrounds, customs and contemporary issues
  • Demonstrate the highest level of personal integrity and ethical behaviour
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people customs and contemporary issues
