About the BLAF
The Boroondara Leisure & Aquatics Facilities (BLAF) are owned by City of Boroondara and proudly managed by YMCA Victoria. The Facilites are home to 4 large Aquatic & Recreation Facilities including Ashburton Pool & Recreation Centre, Boroondara Sports Complex, Hawthorn Aquatic & Leisure Centre, and Kew Recreation Centre (under redevelopment). The facilities receive over 2.5 million visits per annum, housing indoor and outdoor pools, health clubs, cafes, group fitness rooms, and stadiums. BLAF also have a small and dedicated community activation team, working to strategically provide opportunities to those who face additional barriers to participation in physical and wellbeing activities to support their health, both in our centres and across community spaces such as parks, libraries, art galleries and more, all as part of the Activating Boroondara Initiative.
About the Role
As the Community Activation Coordinator for BLAF you will support the operational delivery of the Activating Boroondara Initiative, implement programs and services as part of the Boroondara Disability Sport and Recreation Hub, work in partnership with organisations to make our facilities and programs more inclusive, and lead the communication, promotion and evaluation of community programming.

Reporting to the Community Activation Manager, this position plays a supporting role in connecting the BLAF, Council, and Community together to activate diverse, non-traditional users in the community and help them be more active and connected. The position will also have an emphasis on ‘activating’ outside the four walls of the facilities, overseeing the Disability Sports & Recreation Hub, and managing partnerships with Disability Sport & Recreation, Aspect Autism + more!
The Community Activation Coordinator is responsible for the operational implementation of the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities’ Community Activation strategy including:
- The delivery of the Activating Boroondara Initiative and a year-round calendar of programs, services and events designed to bring physical activity to community spaces e.g. parks, gardens, community centres, libraries, retirement centres, CALD centres and community houses.
- Working directly with Council departments, community organisations and groups, and organisations such as Disability Sport and Recreation, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Blind Sports Victoria, Access Health and Community, and various state sporting organisations.
- Focusing on improving opportunities for identified cohorts to participate in sport and recreation. In particular: older adults, CALD communities, youth, LGBTQIA+, socially isolated, disadvantaged groups, and those living with a disability, chronic illness or additional needs.
This position is being offered on a part-time (3 days/24 hours per week) basis paid at $36.19 per/hour + super.
About You
As Community Activation Coordinator, you will be a confident project manager with the ability to work autonomously, across teams, and with external partner organisations. Additionally, you will be able to work flexibly and creatively, supporting the Community Activation Manager with the planning, delivering and evaluation of programs and events across Boroondara. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in physical activity development, community development, and/or health promotion.
Able to work both independently and as part of the wider BLAF team.
Can represent The Y positively across sectors and teams.
Strong project management and organisational skills to autonomously develop Activating Boroondara Initiative programming.
An excellent oral and written communicator, you will be able to work in partnership with external organisations to develop programs and services that meet the needs of the community.
Be able to positively contribute to a culture of safety and inclusivity at the facilities.
Aligned with the Y's values, as this is critical for the role.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience in a similar role within the Sports & Recreation, Local Government or Health Promotion sectors will be highly regarded, but if you have Community or Social work experience, we would love to hear from you.
- Tertiary qualifications in Sports Management, Health Promotion or other related fields are desirable.
- Experience in physical activity development, health promotion or community development roles - essential
- Experience working in partnership with external organisations - essential
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - essential
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid - essential
- Experience in communications or community engagement - desirable
