Regulatory Accountant/Advisor

The energy sector is in a period of change driven by customer expectations, new technology, and climate policy. Powerco is nearing the end of a five-year programme of electricity network investment. This dovetails with a range of potential changes to the energy sector as Aotearoa decarbonises its energy consumption.

We’re looking for a Regulatory Accountant/Advisor to join Powerco’s energetic regulatory and pricing team (part of Powerco’s Customer Group). Reporting to the Head of Policy, Regulation, and Markets you will be in a unique position to support Powerco’s engagement with the policy and compliance aspects of regulations that affect the business. You’ll need to travel now and again in this role.

You will get to:

  • Use your organisational skills ensure regulatory compliance obligations are delivered smoothly by staff across the electricity and gas businesses
  • Apply your financial modelling and leadership skills interpret the regulatory rules and how they impact Powerco’s business activities
  • Leverage your strong interpersonal skills as you work collaboratively with teams across the business and offices to manage change to and delivery of regulatory requirements
  • Flex your intellectual curiosity - you’ll be looking at economic, financial and technical issues that affect the business both now and in the future

We’re a small team so we share the tasks. The core parts of your role will involve:

  • Providing advice and insights to the business about the impact of regulatory developments and decisions, particularly those with a finance/accounting element
  • Managing Powerco’s processes to meet its regulatory disclosure obligations, including engagement with Powerco staff on regulatory requirements, processes, and governance arrangements
  • Providing advice and assurance to Powerco about its regulatory disclosure obligations
  • Providing input to the team’s preparation and delivery of Powerco’s submissions on policy and regulatory topics

The person we are looking for will need a combination of:

  • A tertiary degree or equivalent in finance or economics or similar analytical subject. 
  • Knowledge of the NZ electricity and/or gas industry or similar regulated industry and a desire to learn more
  • An understanding of the concepts underlying the design and operation of energy markets and regulation of the distribution networks
  • At least five years’ experience of work in a finance / advisory capacity
  • The curiosity and persistence to own and resolve complex issues
