Operational Systems Specialist

New Plymouth with flexible working options available from this location

The operational technology that underpins our business is becoming vastly more complex, is tightly integrated with our organisation's broader IT systems, and plays an essential role in the economic and social well-being of our customers.

As an Operational Systems Specialist, you are passionate about helping our business manage this technology while exploring innovative ways to achieve better outcomes for our customers. If you thrive on variety, enjoy problem-solving, and value the autonomy to influence how we work, this role could be a perfect fit for you!

About us

Our purpose is to connect communities. It’s at the heart of everything we do as we serve our customers now and into the future. At Powerco, we’re passionate about doing Mahi that keeps over 1.1 million customers connected and enables energy choices as we support Aotearoa on the journey to a low-carbon future.

Ngā Tikanga – Our Way, is what guides us to achieve our purpose and ensures we’re better together, work smarter, proud to be here, and future-focused in how we work together with each other, our communities, and industry stakeholders.

About the role

Reporting to the Operational Systems Manager, you’ll help our business understand, manage, and continuously improve the operational software systems (e.g., SCADA) that enable our people to fulfil the organisation’s core mission.

Your strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and curiosity will allow you to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, gaining insights both into how they work today to safely deliver electricity using our digital tools, and how they work tomorrow to support New Zealand’s transition to a low-carbon future where a reliable supply of electricity is crucial.

This role goes beyond the typical specialist position – we're looking for someone who sees the big picture, understands that the effective application of technology is about bringing our people along on the journey, and can translate complex technical concepts into language that the broader business can grasp.

The Operational Systems Team is purpose-driven and fosters an environment where development, growth, and collaboration are highly valued and encouraged. Our team members are trusted across the organisation to help make decisions that directly influence the way it works. In this role, you’ll be a go-to person for guidance on improving the operation of our real-time operational systems.

Skills & Experience

To be a success in this role, you:

  • Are naturally inquisitive – You’ll have a knack for seeing the ‘fuller picture’ when it comes to technology. You understand how complex computer systems interact to control the real-world electricity assets that influence the lives of thousands.
  • Focus on people – Whilst our technology is mission-critical, so too are the people that drive it. You understand that improving the way we work is one part technology and two parts people.
  • Understand the concepts – You have a deep understanding of SCADA systems and technology, the concepts that underpin them, and you may even know how electricity is distributed across New Zealand’s poles and wires.
  • Are passionate about your role – You are driven to boost Powerco’s culture, improve the way we all work, and manage risk to bring about a high-performance culture.

Benefits

Our investment in you

  • Loads of flexibility – we embrace hybrid working, so if you’d like to a day or two from home – that’s fine by us
  • All the usual stuff, but way better – 4% KiwiSaver, ability to buy extra leave, paid volunteer days, free fruit in the office, amazing Parental Leave entitlements, free life and medical insurance – Wow!!!
  • As much growth and development as you can take!
  • Working with an inclusive, supportive and fun team – well we’d like to think so
