Design Engineer - Substations

Are you looking for an opportunity to learn and develop your electrical engineering knowledge in the electricity distribution industry or are you looking for a new challenge in your career? Powerco are offering a position as an entry level Substations Design Engineer.

This is an opportunity for someone looking to learn and develop the skills required to be able to create designs of new substation builds and asset replacements on the Powerco network. As this is at an entry level, the expectation is that the successful candidate will build on their existing fundamental electrical knowledge and “take it to the next level”.

Eventually you will be able to offer specialist technical support across the business and guide and influence standard primary and secondary designs. Opportunities to undertake personal development courses and professional registration will also be a part of the development. At the same time taking on challenging work whilst maintaining a good work life balance.

You will also have a good understanding of the operation and maintenance of electrical protection and control systems. Therefore, if you have an analytical mind, like to impart your knowledge to other people and enjoy problem solving, this role in our Substation Design Team may be for you. 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop conceptual and detailed designs for substation projects;
  • Review external conceptual and detailed designs for substation projects;
  • Investigation and analysis substation related incidents;
  • Develop Powerco’s substation and network policies and standards;
  • Assist with preparing substation development and renewal plans for Powerco; and
  • Provide technical support to other Powerco teams and Service Providers.
  • Advise on technical issues involving ground mounted distribution equipment

It is preferable that candidates have:

  • An understanding of substation primary and secondary system designs;
  • A general understanding or willingness to learn about substation equipment arrangements and installation methods;  
  • A basic understanding of electricity protection systems design;
  • A basic understanding of protection primary and secondary testing;
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • A basic understanding of ground mounted equipment (RMU’s, Distribution transformers etc.)
