Turn data into insight. Help Parliament make sense of the world.
Te tīma | The Team
Join the Research Services team in the Parliamentary Library | Te Pātaka Rangahau and help deliver impartial research and data to members of Parliament, select committees, and parliamentary agencies. We are a collaborative, customer-focused group committed to supporting a strong, thriving democracy.
Mō te tūnga | About the Role
As a Data Insights Adviser, you’ll work alongside other researchers to turn data into visual‑first products such as dashboards, maps, and short data briefs. You’ll be supported and mentored by a Senior Data Insights Adviser, giving you space to develop your skills while contributing meaningfully from day one.
Most of our work is delivered in days or weeks, not months. That means you’ll need to be comfortable adapting quickly, prioritising work, and moving between tasks as new questions arise.
Ngā haepapa matua | Key Responsibilities
- Translate complex questions into clear, impartial data insights
- Design and deliver dashboards, maps, and short data products for non-technical audiences
- Work closely with researchers to support responsive research requests, often to tight deadlines
- Build and maintain reusable templates, datasets, and simple data tools
- Learn and experiment with automation, AI, and new ways of working to improve how we deliver insights
- Collaborate across a large multidisciplinary team, as well as in smaller project groups
Tō kete | What You Will Bring
This role is less about being a technical specialist and more about how you think and work.
You’re likely to thrive if you:
- Are a curious problem solver who enjoys figuring things out
- Have sound foundations with data and analysis and want to keep building your capability
- Can work confidently in a fast paced, responsive environment
- Are adaptable, pragmatic, and comfortable making judgement calls
- Enjoy working with others and contributing to a collaborative, supportive team
Your experience might include:
- A few years’ experience working with data, insights, analysis, or research
- Experience turning data into clear, practical outputs for decision makers
- Hands on experience with tools such as Excel, Power BI, ArcGIS, or similar, or a strong aptitude for learning them
- Examples of problem solving, not just technical delivery
- Experience working to deadlines and juggling multiple priorities
- A relevant tertiary qualification
You don’t need to be an expert in every tool. If you have solid foundations, good instincts, and the willingness to learn, we’d love to hear from you.
