About the Team | Mō te tīma

The Parliamentary Engagement team is a unique collaboration of staff from both the Office of the Clerk and the Parliamentary Service. Together, we’re responsible for building and executing Parliament’s engagement strategy - helping the public better understand and participate in the democratic process.

From education to digital content, we deliver innovative, accessible, and inclusive initiatives that bring Parliament closer to New Zealanders. We work directly with MPs, media, and the public to ensure everyone has the opportunity to engage with Parliament’s work in a meaningful way.

About the Role | Mō te tūnga

We’re looking for a creative and strategic Social Media Adviser to help bring Parliament to life online. In this role, you’ll be responsible for managing Parliament’s social media presence and growing our digital audience across multiple platforms.

You'll create engaging and informative content that connects people with the work of Parliament and its committees - from live events and legislative milestones to behind-the-scenes insights. You’ll also advise and support internal teams to align content with our wider engagement strategy.

This is an opportunity to shape the voice of Parliament on social media, while working alongside a team that’s passionate about making Parliament more open, accessible, and responsive to New Zealanders.

Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua

  • Plan, produce, and manage content for Parliament’s official social media channels
  • Monitor public comments and provide timely, respectful responses in line with impartiality standards
  • Liaise with media, subject matter experts, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality, plain-English content
  • Support the implementation of Parliament’s engagement strategy with expert digital and social media advice
  • Analyse and report on social media performance to improve reach and engagement
  • Ensure content is accessible and reflects Parliament’s values, including tikanga Māori
  • Develop and review policies, provide staff training, and promote best practices in digital engagement
  • Identify emerging digital trends and opportunities to connect with new audiences

What You Will Bring | Tō kete

  • Proven experience in social media strategy, content creation, and community engagement
  • Excellent written communication skills with a strong grasp of plain-English writing and editing
  • Competence in audiovisual content creation and digital storytelling
  • Experience using analytics to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement
  • Strong understanding of impartiality, accessibility, and public sector communications
  • Confidence working with diverse stakeholders including MPs, media, and the public
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent practical experience
