The Finance team at Parliamentary Service is essential to supporting those who shape New Zealand’s democracy. We are hiring for two positions in this role.

Te tīma | The team

As part of the Corporate Services Group, the Finance team provides a range of financial, planning and procurement services to Parliamentary Service customers, ensuring financial management practices support the strategic goals of the Service through effective delivery of reporting, advice and decisions.

This position is about connecting with people, building relationships and providing helpful and timely financial advice. As part of the Finance team, we have six finance business partners, supported by a systems accountant, that share knowledge and wins, work together on complex requests, and enjoy a bit of (often food-related) banter in the office. They are trusted and empowered to provide effective financial management, reporting, and insights for their customers in the Parliamentary Service and Office of the Clerk, including leaders, budget managers, Party Whips, Chiefs of Staff, and Members of Parliament and their staff.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

You'll enjoy this role as it involves many exciting things that vary from day to day. Reporting to the Finance Manager – Business Partnering, you'll partner with our customers, such as leadership teams and budget managers, not to mention Members of Parliament and their staff, and give them excellent financial advice that anticipates their needs. You will help them budget their funds, analyse and report their finances, and improve their financial skills. Responsibilities include:

  • Proactively and collaboratively working alongside the business to deliver quality strategic financial leadership, top notch advice and analysis that will shape, support, and inform decision-making, including financial planning, performance review, as well as assessing project investment decisions.
  • Playing a key role in the planning and delivery of Budget Bids, Cabinet Papers, and annual budgets, working with budget managers to create, manage and monitor their budgets/forecasts.
  • Providing high-quality monthly reporting and financial analysis to budget managers and the executive leadership team.
  • Growing the financial capability of our customers, translating financial advice to those with varying levels of financial capability.

Tō kete | What you'll bring to the role

We're keen to talk to people who have practical experience in a similar finance business partnering or management accounting role, preferably in the public sector. You'll need to be a good written and verbal communicator with a collaborative style to establish and maintain relationships with different people, and show a dedication to high quality and timely customer service. In addition, your strong ethics and integrity and a proactive ’getting stuff done’ approach to delivering results and managing and influencing various stakeholder interests will help your career grow here.

Why work for Parliamentary Service?

  • We offer a range of benefits including study assistance, better-than-your-average 5 weeks' annual leave and flexible working arrangements. Our ever-changing environment allows us to be part of the action at Parliament including working with parties and members, and attending question time, select committees and other key events.
