The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand is seeking an experienced media and communications professional with knowledge of the political media landscape.

The primary role of the Senior Press Secretary will be to ensure Green Party policy positions are communicated efficiently and effectively to the media and public.

The successful candidate will work closely with other communications staff to help plan and implement the Green Party’s media strategy, provide media advice to MPs, respond to media inquiries, pitch stories, write and send press releases, and manage media events.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the Director of Communications and other communications staff to ensure strong and consistent messaging in Green Party media coverage
  • Advising MPs on how to communicate effectively in the media
  • Drafting high quality press releases both in response to breaking news and government announcements, and to announce Green Party policy positions
  • Preparing briefings for MPs ahead of media interviews to ensure strong messaging in response to any possible questions
  • Monitoring media coverage and preparing weekly reports for MPs with advice on how to ensure positive media

Your strong relationship and interpersonal skills will help you to succeed in this role as you maintain strong working relationships with journalists. It goes without saying that you will have experience in journalism, communications and/or public relations.

This exciting opportunity will offer you variety, challenge and will provide you with a unique insight into the political process and how Parliament operates.

The appointing salary band for this role is $100,000-$115,000 per annum. Appointments will be based on your skills and experience.

This is a Wellington-based position with occasional travel to other cities and regions.
