A core function of this support is our People Group, delivering HR and payroll services that enable great employee experiences across Parliament. You’ll be part of a collaborative Payroll and HR Systems team, working closely with HR, Finance, managers, and parliamentary offices to deliver accurate, reliable payroll services in a complex and unique environment.

Mō te tūnga | About the role:

In this varied and important role you will have the opportunity to:

  • Process fortnightly payroll accurately and on time, ensuring staff are paid correctly and in line with their entitlements
  • Maintain and update employee payroll records including new starters, variations, allowances, deductions and final pays
  • Manage leave processing and ensure entitlements are applied correctly across a range of employment scenarios
  • Respond to payroll queries from staff, managers and MPs with a high level of service, care and confidentiality
  • Prepare and submit payroll related returns to external agencies including IRD, WINZ and others
  • Produce and check payroll reports, ensuring accuracy and alignment with financial systems
  • Support audit and compliance by maintaining strong documentation and record keeping practices
  • Work closely with wider HR and Finance teams to support continuous improvement and smooth service delivery

This role is ideal for someone with solid payroll experience who enjoys working in a detailed, service focused environment, or someone looking to deepen their experience in a complex and meaningful public sector setting. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and bring a flexible, proactive approach.

As a Payroll Officer, you’ll bring strong attention to detail and a customer focused mindset. Your CV will clearly demonstrate:

  • Proven experience in payroll or personnel operations, with strong understanding of payroll processes
  • Experience using computerised payroll systems and confidence working with data and systems
  • High level of accuracy and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong customer service approach with the ability to handle confidential information appropriately
  • Good working knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Office tools

Desirable:

  • Experience with CHRIS21/iChris payroll system
  • Knowledge of New Zealand payroll legislation such as Holidays Act, Employment Relations Act and KiwiSaver
  • Familiarity with Parliamentary Service or public sector employment conditions

The salary for this role is $72,754 per annum.
