Mō te tūnga | About the role:

This is a specialist Pastry Chef de Partie position. You will co-ordinate and prepare pastry, dessert, and baked items to the highest standards, in accordance with Parliamentary Service standards and under the direction of the Sous Chef. You will supervise shift operations in the absence of the Sous Chef, manage service periods related to pastry production, and support the supervision and training of junior chefs within the pastry function.

Due to an exciting secondment, we're looking for a Chef de Partie Pastry for a fixed term role until August 2027.  

  • Prepare and produce high-quality pastry, desserts, and baked goods for a variety of functions and events across the parliamentary precinct.
  • Support menu planning and development for pastry offerings, with an emphasis on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Maintain a high standard of hygiene, food safety, and discipline across all kitchen areas, in line with kitchen standards, government legislation, and Parliamentary Service policy.
  • Ensure responsible use of ingredients and minimisation of waste, consulting with the Sous Chef where required.
  • Support the café with supply of baked and pastry items, and assist with sandwich preparation when required.

Tō kete | What you'll bring to the role:

Proven pastry experience is essential for this role. We will only consider applicants who can demonstrate hands-on experience working as a pastry chef or in a pastry-focused Chef de Partie role.

  • Demonstrated experience in pastry, dessert, and baking production within a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a busy kitchen team.
  • A reliable and professional approach, with a strong focus on punctuality, consistency, and preparation.
  • The ability to follow direction, manage service pressures, and contribute positively to team culture.
  • Experience in a high-volume catering, café, or restaurant environment (including function catering) — desirable.
  • A recognised Chef qualification.
  • A positive attitude and enthusiasm to the team.
  • Flexibility with scheduling — shifts and times may vary.

The appointing salary band for this role is $64,485 – $70,979 pro rata per annum (the remuneration band extends beyond the appointing salary to account for tenure progression).
