Train Systems Principal

About the Role

Reporting through to the Train Systems Lead, the Train Systems Principal exists to manage the review, development and implementation of technical solutions primarily focused on electrical systems with train consists, ECP brakes, EOTM’s and interface of Locomotives.

This position will be responsible for providing engineering support to the Operations and Maintenance teams specialising in ECP equipment and operational asset performance.

With a key focus of assisting Pacific National’s Coal and Bulk Maintenance Execution teams, it is also their responsibility to improve the reliability & availability of Pacific National’s ECP Wagon Fleets in line with reliability centred maintenance principals and condition monitoring techniques, whilst also aiming to reduce maintenance costs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing reliability support across all fleets operated by Pacific National.
  • Managing risk to improve safety and performance of rollingstock and reducing whole life costs.
  • Improving long term performance of ECP/WDP equipment.
  • Reviewing safety data in relation to rolling stock incidents and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Delivery of reliability solutions to Rail Safety, OH&S policies and industry standards.
  • Obtaining and collating information from Train incidents.
  • Weekly, monthly and yearly reporting of findings and improvements.
  • Collaborating with Wagon Engineers to update standards of Fleet maintenance.
  • Continuously carrying out testing methods to confirm performance of fleet.
  • Identifying root causes through carrying out and assisting in investigations.
  • Acting as a technical lead for high-risk investigations.
  • Providing technical support to relevant stakeholders.
  • Liaising with internal, external stakeholders.
  • Working with external suppliers to develop system and data troubleshooting.
  • Supporting wagon maintenance training activities.

About You

You will be an excellent and articulate communicator with appropriate engineering or trade experience with demonstrated engineering application. You will have exceptional problem solving and reporting abilities. 

This role requires an individual with high levels of strategic thinking and long-term planning on engineering and continuous improvement competencies whilst being able to collaborate with multiple stakeholders at once. 

In addition, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in engineering or trade certificate with demonstrated engineering application.
  • Demonstrated experience working on ECP equipment on locomotives and wagons.
  • Ability to provide insights and recommendations that support engineering and maintenance improvement initiative.
  • Sound knowledge of the American Association Railroads (AAR), Railway of Australia Standards (ROA) and Rail Industry Safety & Standard Boards (RISSB).
  • Strong investigation and fault-finding abilities coupled with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to extract, interpret and manipulate data through various channels including PC based software’s related to project management and maintenance information systems.
  • Relevant tertiary or post-graduate qualifications in Technical or Engineering with Project Management experience.
  • Excellent verbal written and communication skill.
  • Excellent stakeholder communication skills.

Full Drivers licence is required as travel will be required on a need by basis.
