About the role

Reporting to the Train Systems Lead the Train Dynamics Specialist (Engineer) is responsible for managing the review, development and implementation of train configuration or design modifications. This role supports Operations by reducing the risks related to train dynamics and ensures the safety of the Rolling Stock.

Key accountabilities include:

  • You'll be responsible for meticulously reviewing and approving train designs to ensure they meet safety and operational standards.
  • Provide engineering support to obtain waivers from relevant regulatory bodies, such as TOC waivers from RIMs.
  • Conduct Simulations of in-train forces, fuel usage, sectional run times, stopping distances, and load haulage, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
  • Collaborate with Operations to maximise train payloads and optimise transit times, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Support Operations in addressing service delivery issues and implementing improvements to enhance customer satisfaction.

  • Contribute to the development of engineering standards and guides to uphold safety and quality standards.
  • Support compliance activities with regulatory bodies such as RIMs, ONRSR, and ATSB, ensuring adherence to all relevant regulations and standards.
  • Compliance to RIM Standards and Operating requirements for all rail corridors.

About you

We're seeking a motivated skilled engineer with a passion for rolling stock and train dynamics to join our team and contribute to the safety and efficiency of our operations.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, attributes, and experience:

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Rolling Stock Engineering are advantageous.
  • CPEng and RPEQ qualifications are desired.
  • Proficiency in understanding train dynamics and executing testing requirements.
  • Understanding of Rolling Stock Standards, Specifications, and RIM Standards, along with operational requirements.
  • Familiarity with testing requirements for rolling stock performance.
  • Sound knowledge of PC-based software, including Microsoft Office. High-level programming language skills are desired.
  • Ability to extract and analyse data, along with proficient report-writing capabilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high degree of initiative, innovation, and flexibility.
  • Strong level of communications and interpersonal skill.
  • Ability to be self-managed and work unsupervised, as well as working in a team environment providing support to operational staff.
