About the role
Pacific National is seeking an experienced and proactive NSW Maintenance Manager based in Newcastle to lead, plan and deliver safe, efficient and high‑quality maintenance outcomes across the region. Reporting to the Manager Locomotive Fleet Performance and Sustainability, this role plays a critical part in driving asset reliability and operational performance.
In this key leadership position, you will oversee a multi‑disciplinary team including shift supervisors, maintainers, a supply officer and a site scheduler. You will be accountable for high‑quality maintenance delivery that meets fleet availability, compliance and asset performance targets.
This role acts as the central interface between maintenance, operations, engineering and planning, and plays a significant role in performance leadership and cultural uplift across the NSW region
What you’ll be doing
- Lead, support and develop supervisors, maintainers, supply and scheduling staff to build a high‑performing, safety‑driven team.
- Oversee maintenance execution, ensuring safe and efficient delivery of planned maintenance, running repairs, inspections and modifications.
- Drive improvements in fleet availability, MDBF, reliability and MTTR through data‑driven decision making.
- Ensure compliance with Rail Safety National Law, WHS requirements, environmental obligations and internal governance.
- Lead safety initiatives, toolbox talks, incident investigations and verification of safety controls (LOTO, PTW, isolations, JSAs).
- Maintain accuracy across CMMS work orders, defect coding, asset data and inspection standards.
- Partner with supply chain and site teams to ensure the availability of spares, tooling and consumables.
- Act as the primary NSW interface for operations, planning, engineering, OEMs and senior leadership.
- Analyse performance data, identify defect trends and lead continuous improvement and maintenance optimisation initiatives.
- Contribute to budget planning, labour utilisation, contractor oversight and cost‑control measures.
What you’ll bring
- Relevant trade qualification (Mechanical, Diesel Fitting, Electrical or similar) and/or tertiary qualifications in engineering.
- Proven leadership experience in locomotive or heavy mobile equipment maintenance.
- Demonstrated success managing supervisors, trades and technical teams.
- Experience delivering planned maintenance programs and improving reliability.
- Strong WHS and rail safety knowledge, including LOTO/PTW and risk management systems.
- CMMS proficiency (SAP, Maximo or Pronto) and confidence working with asset performance data.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and reporting capability.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills under operational pressure.
- Desirable: Leadership qualifications, lean/continuous improvement experience, project management exposure, and locomotive platform familiarity (C44 / 7FDL).
