The purpose of this role is to be a senior technical authority and people leader within the OneData engineering team, this role bridges people management, strategic thinking with hands-on execution and delivery. You will collaborate closely with other lead engineers and managers to shape and implement the broader data and engineering strategy. It involves taking ownership end to end for projects, guiding the design and operation of data systems, and ensuring their alignment with business needs.

What you’ll be doing

  • Responsible for leading and empowering a team of data engineers and supporting their career and skills development.
  • Coordinate and lead the implementation in a broad range of data engineering initiatives, from requirement gathering through to release.
  • Define technical solution strategies in line with business goals and oversee development to ensure quality, security, and timeliness.
  • Establish and enforce coding standards, CI/CD practices, and data governance rules to maintain high-quality data pipelines and robust data structures across the team.
  • Proactively identify, recommend and drive improvements to existing platform architecture (e.g., pipeline patterns, tooling, observability) and engineering to optimize performance and reduce costs.
  • Serve as a supporting technical escalation point, guiding the team through complex troubleshooting and solution design scenarios.
  • Work with product team, data scientists, analysts, and other engineering squads to translate business needs into feasible technical solutions, aligning to best practices and overall OneData strategy.
  • Support and collaborate with the OneData engineering manager to plan resourcing, timelines, future roadmap items and engineering or architecture strategy, proactively flagging up risks and dependencies.
  • Ensure data solutions adhere to privacy, security, and compliance standards, integrating these principles into pipeline design and data models.
  • Oversee monitoring, alerting, and incident response measures to ensure the reliability and availability of data services. Supporting the measuring of key OneData and Data Engineering data ops metrics.
  • Be a leading exemplar and contributor to general culture and engineering subculture at OneData

What you'll bring to the table

  • Degree in a relevant field (e.g. computer science, software engineering, information systems) or a combination of industry training and practical experience
  • 6+ years of industry experience in data warehousing /engineer systems design and development, preferably in a large corporate environment
  • Experience with leading technical teams and people management
  • Confident demonstrating agile product management processes
  • Demonstrated experience in technical product management, software development management and/or solutions design domains
  • Comfortable with a hands-on role through the full data lifecycle of design, development, delivery and ongoing support.
  • Proficient in SQL, Python, Jinja, DBT, Airflow and Snowflake (or similar equivalents)
  • Be an excellent written/spoken communicator, with strong interpersonal skills across a diverse group of stakeholders in particular conveying complex technical concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence architectural or engineering decisions and create alignment among various stakeholder levels.
  • Comfortable operating with ambiguity, making decisions with incomplete information and adapting to shifting priorities in a fast paced environment.
