This position is a temp/contract position of 1 month with the possibility of extension based on performance. Could also be contract-to-hire for the ideal candidate.

Hourly pay rate: $25.00 (37.5 hours per week)

Hours are 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Job Description:

In the Joint Engineering and Physics Instrument Shop (JEPIS), the Instrument Maker/Machinist will perform machining specifically in support of the School of Engineering - the Department Physics, as well as other University departments.

JEPIS is a prototype fabrication shop that creates fixtures in support of research. It also includes a student shop that contains instruments available to students for their academic studies. Students, staff and faculty that have been trained in the proper use of the instruments are given authorized access.

What you'll do:

  • The JEPIS Instrument Maker/Machinist will be responsible for introducing students, staff and faculty to machine shop technologies as needed.
  • Daily Tasks Include precision machining and fabrication of parts and models in a variety of materials, in accordance with specified dimensions and close tolerances.
  • Must be able to operate all pieces of equipment in the Main Shop and Student Shop. The equipment would include, but not limited to Lathes, Bridgeport type milling machines, CNC retrofit milling machines, surface grinder, band saws, grinders and presses.
  • Must be able to produce quality parts in a timely manner.

What you'll bring:

  • High school diploma and/or trade school education in machine shop.
  • Possess superior machining skills to be able to fabricate fixtures and components to close tolerances with a minimum of 5 years hands-on experience in a Model Shop/experimental machining environment.
  • Manual + CNC Machining in Model Shop environment.
  • Have proven knowledge of CNC setup and operation and related software (i.e. Accurite/Pro TO Trax and read and understand blueprints).
  • Possesses own basic machine shop tools.
  • Must be able to braze, TIG and arc weld a variety of metals.
  • Competent in SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills to deal efficiently with all University personnel.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to instruct some machining courses and advise on safe practices and procedures.
