Our client, a recognized university in Rhode Island, is seeking a temporary Network Engineer to refresh 18 distribution switches. The role offers eligibility to work on additional assignments with the employer (as needed).

Job Description:
This is a senior level position. The selected must have worked with Cisco equipment with advanced layer 2 and layer 3 topologies. Previous experience with refreshing equipment in a large production network is required.
The Network Engineer works closely with other teams in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to plan, design, and implement all network-related services at the University. Networking areas include all wired, wireless, and data center networks as well as internet and cloud connectivity. Related network services include DNS/DHCP, network authentication, client and p2p VPN, server load balancing, and management/monitoring tools.
The level of knowledge and experience, combined with excellent verbal and written communication skills allow the Network Engineer to execute and implement network hardware upgrades that may include coordination with various teams. Communication at varying technical levels is essential.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide project management and oversight for a range of network or Facilities projects. Requires communication and coordination with other members of the Network Team and/or other OIT Teams. Organize meetings with management and other OIT groups or University departments regarding network design and best practices. This position could lead or participate in Facilities Management or departmental projects to design, install, configure, and document infrastructure and network components. Ensure tasks are completed on time and issues are resolved in a timely manner.
This position could participate in OIT projects as a network resource for consulting, design, configuration, and implementation. Ensure projects follow network standards and technology roadmap. Bring issues to management for discussion. Network maintenance and upgrades should be limited to specific troubleshooting or areas of expertise. Changes are documented, and operational procedures, diagrams, and systems are updated. Resolution of assigned tickets required.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; 6+ years of experience without degree required.
- Training/certifications (such as CCNP) preferred.
- 5+ years of experience with implementing ethernet networking required.
- 3+ years of experience with troubleshooting ethernet network preferred.
- Some programming or scripting experience using a common language such as Python is preferred.
- Customer-facing technical support role requiring verbal and written communication with customers is required.
- Experience with ticketing system preferred.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Must be able to independently lead cross-functional project teams.
Job Competencies - Must Have
- Expertise, advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience in the following areas:
- Advanced routing and switching on enterprise network systems.
- Hands-on experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting Cisco Nexus 9K, Catalyst 9K, 4K, 3K series switches.
- Required skills with OSPF, VRFs, VLANs, STP, ACLs, LaCP, HSRP, SVS, VSS technologies.
- Experience with BGP, VDCs, NAT, DNS, DHCP, ASDM, TACACS+, vPC technologies.
- Experience in troubleshooting a complex layer 2 and 3 design.
- Wireless network concepts using centralized controllers, encryption methods, authentication, and RF planning.
- Monitoring protocols such as SNMP
- Packet capturing using tools like Wireshark ○ Experience with Microsoft Visio.
- Experience with leading small to midsize projects required.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize activities.
- Work independently with good time management skills and reliable follow-through.
- Good written and oral communications skills required.
- Excellent customer service skills; tact and sensitivity in dealing with a diverse user community.
- Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
