Tableau Engineer

Contract, long term. Remote.

We are hiring a Tableau Engineer to build and maintain the reporting that a large scale digital operation depends on. The reporting team produces live dashboards that show operational health while events are running, along with detailed post-event reports that leadership uses to analyze performance. This reporting is visible to senior stakeholders and used to make decisions in real time.

This is a hands-on development role. You will spend most of your time writing SQL, shaping data, and building dashboards. Server and site administration is owned by another team, so you need to be comfortable publishing content to Tableau Online without owning the environment itself.

What You Will Do

  • Design and build Tableau reports and dashboards from concept through deployment
  • Write and optimize custom SQL to structure, aggregate, and blend complex data streams for enterprise reporting
  • Apply Tableau's order of operations with precision, including extract, data source, context, and cascading filters
  • Diagnose slow workbooks and move heavy front-end filtering logic into parameterized, database-level SQL
  • Write, tune, and maintain queries across multiple sources, including a data lake, Redshift, SQL Server, and Athena
  • Combine and reshape data using cross-database joins and data blending
  • Maintain reporting datasets so data stays accurate, current, and well structured for downstream use
  • Troubleshoot data issues and report-level issues, and document report logic, data sources, and SQL transformations so the work stays maintainable
  • Build Python scripts for report automation, such as exporting dashboards to PDF or CSV, and integrate Tableau with APIs or tools like Python and R for predictive and real-time reporting
  • Work alongside AWS-based data teams on S3, Glue, and Lambda to source and prepare report data
  • Use AI coding tools and agentic engineering workflows to speed up SQL development, report building, testing, and documentation, and to automate repetitive data prep, QA, and refresh scheduling
  • Contribute to a shared visualization style guide and reporting best practices
  • Support the migration of existing Tableau Server reports to Tableau Online from the report development side

  • BA or BS required, analytical field preferred
  • 5 or more years of experience, weighted heavily toward SQL and Tableau report and dashboard development
  • Proven track record building reporting applications in a professional environment
  • Solid understanding of data modeling and both relational and columnar databases
  • Comfortable using AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot, and working in agentic engineering workflows
  • Strong analytical thinking and structured problem solving
  • Able to manage several projects and assignments at once inside a cross-functional team
  • Versed in agile methodology and practices
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills across diverse teams and disciplines
  • Self-starter who sets priorities, works independently, and hits goals
  • Tableau certification is a plus, though development skill is the priority
