New Acland Coal Mine (NAC) is a thin seam open cut mining operation owned and managed by New Hope Group. NAC is based 35km north-west of Toowoomba and plays a key role in the Darling Downs region as an employer and economic contributor since it began operation in October 2002.
With Stage 3 approved in 2022, the operation is set to continue production into the 2030s. When fully ramped-up, Stage 3 operations are expected to deliver about five million tonnes of saleable product per annum.
About the role:
This position provides an emerging engineer the opportunity to further develop existing experience, while continuing to develop technical skills in the coal mining industry. Working a 7/7 dayshift roster and reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent, the role will deliver high-quality production schedules, mine plans, survey collection and validation. The role will ensure compliance with relevant standards and procedures by assisting with fieldwork, data collection, planning and administrative support.
What you will do:
- Develop and maintain mine plans (short & mid-term), designs and production schedules, along with drill & blast support
- Collaborate with operations teams to ensure plans are implemented safely and efficiently
- Provide accurate survey data to support mine planning, drill & blast activities and operation teams by using modern survey technologies (e.g., UAV’s, Total Station & RTK methodologies)
- Conduct accurate and timely field surveys, to assist production with short term requirements
- Conduct technical analysis including volume calculations, reconciliation and optimisation
- Liaise with geologists, surveyors, environment, production and maintenance teams to align plans
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, permits and safety procedures
- Support continuous improvement by identifying and implementing productivity initiatives
- Participate in risk assessments, audits and incident investigations as required
To be considered for this opportunity, you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mining / Civil) or equivalent
- Graduate with 0 to 2 years’ experience in open cut coal mining preferred, however experienced candidates will also be considered
- Experience using mine planning and scheduling software e.g. Vulcan, SPRY (desirable)
- Field surveying & data capturing skills (desirable)
- Understanding of coal mining methods, equipment and safety standards
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
- Strong analytical skills and time management skills, with a high level of initiative
