MRAEL have partnered with Peabody Energy to offer an Electrical Apprenticeship, commencing January 2027, hosted at Coppabella Mine.

Owned and operated by Peabody Energy, Coppabella Mine is an established open-cut operation in the Bowen Basin focused on safety, high performance, and operational excellence. The site utilises a modern truck and shovel fleet to produce high-quality pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal for the global steel industry, offering a dynamic and stable environment to launch your mining career.

About the Role

As an Apprentice, you will follow a structured, industry-specific training plan. You will learn on the job from industry experts while completing your Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology (AUR31220). This fixed-term position operates on a balanced lifestyle roster, and we strongly encourage local region residents to apply.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will work alongside experienced tradespeople to gain hands-on experience in preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and servicing. Training takes place across both the workshop and field, focusing on some of the mining industry's most advanced equipment. You will receive the dedicated training, mentoring, and support required to become a fully qualified tradesperson.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Complete trade training, workplace competencies and apprenticeship requirements
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of mining machinery and equipment, including conveyors, pumps, hydraulic systems and longwall infrastructure
  • Participate in planned maintenance activities and breakdown response
  • Develop skills in fault finding across hydraulic and mechanical systems
  • Comply with site procedures, standards and contribute to a strong safety culture
  • Work collaboratively with the maintenance team to support reliable mining operations

Who are we seeking?

In the fixed-term position, the successful candidate will show an ability to work safely in a heavy industrial mining environment, demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills, be motivated to learn and develop new skills, and have the ability to work constructively within a team. The positions will be offered on a roster arrangement. Local residents are encouraged to apply.

Students currently completing Year 12 are welcome to apply. If Year 12 has already been completed, the minimum requirement is that candidates achieved a Pass in Pre-vocational English and Mathematics or possess equivalent qualifications.

Pre vocational course in Certificate II in Electrotechnology and work experience within the Electrical industry is highly regarded for this position.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Strong commitment to safety and ability to foster a positive safety culture
  • Reliable, motivated and eager to develop a long-term career in mining
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proactive problem-solving ability and a "can-do" attitude
  • The ability to follow procedures and work safely in a high-risk environment
  • Current driver's licence (or ability to obtain one prior to commencement) and reliable transport.

Applicants must reside within the Mackay, Nebo, Moranbah, or surrounding coalfields region.

Benefits of this position:

  • 4 on 4 off Roster
  • Drive-In Drive-Out (DIDO) camp accommodation facilities available for eligible candidates
  • Opportunities to develop valuable technical and workplace skills
  • A pathway to a long-term career within the electrical industry
  • Ongoing guidance from a dedicated MRAEL Apprentice and Employment Consultant that will guide you through your apprenticeship
