The Senior Manager - Safety is primarily accountable for leading APAC’s centralised safety function, developing and executing a safety strategy aimed at providing a safe workplace for Melbourne Airport and Launceston Airport. This includes:

  • Provide leadership and management of the Safety team.
  • Manage the implementation, monitoring, and review of the APAC Safety Management Standard across APAC, inclusive of all internal Business Units, airlines, tenants, and contractors.
  • Manage the audit and assurance program for APAC across all Business Units.
  • Ensure APAC responsibilities under Victorian OH&S and Commonwealth WHS legislation are fulfilled

Key responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Model APAC’s values in all internal and external dealings, exhibiting desired behaviors and approaches in business activities.
  • Build and maintain morale levels through open communication and sharing of information and ideas to foster a sense of team unity and purpose.
  • Set team and individual goals, aligned with APAM’s high-level goals, and ensure team members understand the expectations of their role.
  • Ensure direct reports receive the necessary level of coaching and support to achieve their goals and KPIs.
  • Identify opportunities for individual growth and agree areas for development.
  • Prepare and conduct constructive performance reviews in line with APAM’s communicated process and timeline.
  • Manage the recruitment and succession planning needs of the Safety team.
  • Comply with appropriate Industrial Relations legislation in relation to staff management/performance issues. 

Safety Management

  • Lead the safety function across APAC.
  • Develop and agree the safety components of the Safety Risk and Compliance Initiatives each financial year and oversee their implementation.
  • Implement a continous improvement program to ensure that the Safety Management System remains up to date and appropriate for the evolving operational environment, changes in legislation and industry best practice.
  • Collaborate with all Business Units and through them all airlines, tenants, and contractors to implement safe work practices across all airport precints at both Mebourne and Launceston Airports. 
  • Manage the OHS auditing program across all aspects of safety management.
  • Provide strategic safety advice to the Executive Leadership Team and Senior Leadership Team.

Safety Reporting

  • Mange the Safety reporting process as part of the Safety Risk and Compliance governance system, including the Safety Risk and Compliance Executive Committee and its relevant sub-committees along with Board Safety reporting.
  • Continuously review safety reporting to ensure it remains appropriate and efficient within the business’ management and communication cycle. Implement improvements where required.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Diploma or degree qualification in OH&S/WHS is preferred
  • Extensive experience in a Senior OH&S role
  • Experience leading a small team and applying influence across a business to achieve safety outcomes.
  • Experience applying OH&S principles within a complex operational business.
  • Ability to perform in a changing environment, operating with a high level of autonomy while maintaining support from key stakeholders.
  • Experience in developing safety reports and presenting to senior leadership (including Board)
