Melbourne Airport are forming a new Ramp Safety Officer team to strengthen safety across the entire airfield and support our team of highly skilled Airfield Safety Officers. This is a great opportunity to contribute to a new function within our Airside Safety team that supports safer operations, stronger engagement with our ground handling partners, and a more proactive approach to managing risk on the apron.

About the Roles

Ramp Safety Officers will help build a strong safety culture across the airfield and actively work to reduce risk and harm for all operators, assets, and infrastructure. The role combines safety checks, culture and engagement activity, rapid response to hazards, and coordination with wider aviation operations. You will be highly visible on the ramp and play a key role in improving safety performance.

What You’ll Bring

  • Understanding of Airfield Operations advantageous, however we are open to applications from non-Aviation candidates
  • Strong WHS knowledge and experience
  • Clear communication and active listening skills
  • Strong skills in SharePoint and Microsoft applications
  • Ability to analyse information and prioritise work using risk models
  • Technical writing and record-keeping capability
  • Organised, structured approach to work, and able to meet deadlines
  • Comfortable working at pace and in a dynamic environment
  • Self-driven and proactive

Key Accountabilities

Airfield Safety

  • Keep a close eye on activity across the apron areas to spot hazards or unsafe behaviour.
  • Respond quickly to safety issues or reports from apron users.
  • Carry out regular safety checks, inspections, and observations
  • Record clear, accurate notes and reports in the required systems.

Patrols and Rapid Response

  • Complete regular patrols on foot or in a vehicle to maintain visibility on the apron.
  • Support quick response to hazards, incidents, or equipment issues.
  • Help with basic safety checks such as speed, equipment condition, and general compliance.

Safety Culture and Engagement

  • Build good relationships with ground handlers and other ramp users.
  • Share important safety messages and encourage safe behaviour.
  • Recognise good safety actions and address poor behaviour where needed.

Operational Support

  • Work with other teams to keep the airfield running safely and smoothly.
  • Support daily planning, especially during busy periods or changing weather.
  • Report faults or issues so they can be fixed quickly.
  • Work closely with the Airfield Safety Officers and complete safety-based activities as tasked by the appropriate Airfield Safety Officer
